Elements of Design This presentation explains the different Elements of Design: Lines Color Value Texture Shape Form Space Art Site

Lines Lines are used in artwork to outline or add detail. There are many types of lines; HorizontalCurved VerticalZigzag DiagonalStraight Dotted

Color Artists add color and value to an artwork to show feeling or emotion. Primary colors are blue, yellow and red. Secondary colors are orange, purple and green. Cool colors are blue, green and purple. Warm colors are red, orange and yellow.

Value Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. If you add white to a color you get a lighter color and it is called a tint. If you add black to a color you get a darker color and it is called a shade.

Texture Artists can create texture in their artwork to show how things feel. Some words that are used to describe texture or how something feels are; rough, smooth, bumpy or furry.

Shape Artists use shapes in artwork that are two dimensional. Some basic shapes are triangles, squares, circles, rectangles and ovals. Artists also use shapes such as stars and hearts.

Form Artists create form in three dimensional artwork. Five basic forms are; sphere, cone, pyramid, cylinder and free-form.

Space Artists create space in artworks that are two dimensional. Positive space is the filled in object. Negative space is the empty space around the object.
