Learning Objectives Students should understand the functions of application software. Student should understand the various type of application software such as software package/ software suit and custom made, and their users.

Application Software Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform. Multiple applications bundled together as a package are sometimes referred to as an software package / software suite e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite. User-written software tailors systems to meet the user's specific needs is called Tailor Made Software.

Examples of Applications Software Analytical software is software that is designed specifically for analysis and development of a particular environment or object. (e.g. MathCAD)

Examples of Applications Software Collaborative software computer-based systems that support groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment. (Also known as Groupware) Wiki, Microsoft project is a example of collaborative software

Examples of Applications Software Communications software is any form of communication between two or more individuals who interact and/or influence each other via computer-supported media (i.e., web browser, instant messaging, e-mail, chat rooms, etc.) Business software is generally any software program that helps a business increase productivity or measure their productivity. (e.g. Accounting software, Project management software, Supply chain software/POS)

Examples of Applications Software A Batabase Management System (DBMS) is a system or software designed to manage a database, and run operations on the data requested by numerous clients. A DBMS is a complex set of software programs that controls the organization, storage and retrieval of data in a database.

Examples of Applications Software A Entertainment software includes: Video Game Console Games Computer & video game Arcade game Mobile Phone Game Handheld game Console game

Examples of Applications Software Multimedia Software is software involve media that uses multiple forms of information content and information processing (e.g. text, audio, graphics, animation, video, interactivity). Media players and Media editing are two type of multimedia software. Media editing software includes image editing software, video editing and sound editing software.

Examples of Applications Software Educational software is computer software whose primary purpose is teaching or self-learning. Educational software includes Dictionary, Encyclopedia, teaching aids program, web-based training, virtual learning environment program

Software Package The separate applications in a software package usually have a common user interface that making it easier for the user to learn and use each application. They may have some capability to interact with each other in ways beneficial to the user. (For example a spreadsheet might be able to be embedded in a word processor document even though it had been created in the separate spreadsheet application.)

Custom-made Applications Custom-made software is supposed to deliver specialized and/or unique user interfaces, workflow, and system interconnects that provide the buyer with more benefits and resultant value than package software applications offer. A Custom Software Developer (CSD) is a business term for companies or individuals specializing in creating made-to-order software for specific customers and applications. It’s more expensive than buying a package software. ( Workflow at its simplest is the movement of documents and/or tasks through a work process. )

Choosing the right application You should consider: Meet your requirements? Company offers the best support? The greatest expandability? Simple to learn? Popularity ? Price ?
