DG RTDEuropean Commission SIXTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME FOR RESEARCH, TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION ACTIVITIES (FP6) SPECIFIC PROGRAMME PRIORITY 6 - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, GLOBAL CHANGE AND ECOSYSTEMS: 6.2 SUSTAINABLE SURFACE TRANSPORT Zoe KETSELIDOU European Commission DG Research 1

DG RTDEuropean Commission Q JUSTIFICATION: - Transport demand growth by 2010:+ 38% freight, + 24% passengers -Environmental pressures (increased CO 2 emissions) -Safety (number of road deaths and casualties, maritime freight transport accidents,…) Q OBJECTIVES: - Fight congestion -Influence modal split Q APPROACH: - Integrating and re-balancing transport modes -Improving the safety, performance, efficiency and environmental impact of transport systems -Ensuring the development of a sustainable European transportation system,in addition to competitive systems and means of transport. 6.2 “ SUSTAINABLE SURFACE TRANSPORT” 3

DG RTDEuropean Commission 6.2 “SUSTAINABLE SURFACE TRANSPORT” RESEARCH PRIORITIES 1. DEVELOPING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY and COMPETITIVE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND MEANS OF TRANSPORT - New technologies and concepts for all surface transport modes (road, rail and waterborne) -Advanced design and production techniques 2. MAKING RAIL & MARITIME TRANSPORT SAFER, MORE EFFECTIVE AND MORE COMPETITIVE - Re-balancing and integrating different transport modes - Increasing road, rail and waterborne safety and avoiding traffic congestion OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES: 4

DG RTDEuropean Commission 6.2 “SUSTAINABLE SURFACE TRANSPORT” WORKPROGRAMME  Advanced vehicle/vessel and infrastructure concepts  Standardised design and manufacturing systems  An Integrated Transport System aiming to: ·promote modal shift to cleaner and safer transport means ·increase safety and capacity of infrastructure n  A collaborative research system assured by the European Research Area (ERA)

DG RTDEuropean Commission What is ERRAC? ERRAC is an Advisory Council. ERRAC’s aim is to suggest and to develop an strategic view for rail research in Europe in order to strengthen the competitive leadership of the European rail sector, by supporting the creation of a single European railway system. ERRAC brings together all stakeholders of the European railway research, and as such it has the capacity of influencing the implementation of this strategy.

DG RTDEuropean Commission – Member States (15) – European Commission (4) – Manufacturing industry (6) – Research establishments and academia (2) – Operators (5) – Infrastructure managers (3) – Environmental (1) & urban planning (1) organisations & transport users groups [freight(2), rail safety(1) & passengers(1)]. ERRAC Members are...

DG RTDEuropean Commission ERRAC Mission The primary mission of ERRAC is to establish and carry forward a Strategic Rail Research Agenda (SRRA) that will influence all European stakeholders in the planning of research programmes, in particular national and EU ones. The Strategic Rail Research Agenda is addressed to the Member States, the European institutions and the railways’ stakeholders.
