Future generation of clean & economical engines for cars Background: Flexible & clean engine characterised by ultra low emissions (very low: CO2 & noise, noxious gaseous and particulates emissions reduced to near zero levels), able to function on alternative and renewable fuels Expected outcome: Advanced knowledge, cost effective clean powertrains for passenger cars; Several passenger car demonstrators

Virtual institute on advanced combustion Background: Structure dispersed European research on advanced combustion, disseminate new knowledge, training of young engineers - scientists Expected outcome: Virtual institute dealing with simulation software, data bases, advanced measurement methods, training facilities, conferences

Safety for European roads Background: To improve road safety in Europe by developing integrated safety systems. Expected outcome: Development and introduction of advanced protection systems (passive safety) ; Evaluation of regulations and counter-measures.

Virtual Centre of Excellence for enhanced road vehicle passive safety Background: To improve road safety and to reduce the number of deaths and casualties in Europe. Expected outcome: Creation of a permanent organisation in the field of passive safety for road transport at European level; Creation of common research facilities and platforms.

New technologies and concepts for clean maintenance, dismantling and recycling of road vehicles (2.5).

Ultra low emission for marine propulsion Background: Reduce maritime transport pollution in view of IMO forthcoming legislation. Expected outcome: Marine propulsion operating with conventional and non- conventional fuels, Optimisation of the total ship operational efficiency.

Integrated design and manufacturing in shipyards... Background: Maintain the leadership of EU shipyards in complex vessels. Expected outcome: Integration of production processes in shipyards. Modularization and standardisation of components and sub-assemblies.

Center of competence for structural analysis of ships... Background: Develop waterborne transport through improved public and commercial confidence on ship structural reliability. Expected outcome: Advanced knowledge on structural fatigue, collision strength, fire protection, noise and vibration. Creation of common research facilities and platforms

Specific Targeted Research for Waterborne Transport Measurement and sensing technologies for impact on the environment (1.7). Maintenance, construction of infrastructure and vessels interface (2.5, 2.6, 2.7).
