Gas and Petroleum Database Resources GeoRef – 1785 to present –GeoRefs In Process – Records that are in the process of being indexed prior to their integration in the main GeoRef database. –GeoRefs Serials - GeoRef Serials contains title, CODEN, ISSN, and publication information for each serial referred to in GeoRef. GeoRef GeoRef is the American Geological Institute's geoscience database containing over 2.8 million records of North America since 1785, and other areas of the world since The database references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses.

GeoRef COVERAGE GeoRef scans more than 3,500 journals in 40 languages Books, Maps and Reports Each month between 6,000 and 7,000 new references are added to the database. The database is the equivalent of four major reference publications: "Bibliography of North American Geology," "Bibliography and Index of Geology, Exclusive of North America," "Geophysical Abstracts," and the "Bibliography and Index of Geology."

Petroleum Abstracts This database is often the primary research tool for petroleum exploration, development, transportation, and production, as well as related topics that concern environmental, safety, and health issues. It contains bibliographic citations and abstracts from literature around the world on upstream petroleum operations, plus relevant patent information.

Searching in Petroleum Abstracts From the Select a database page you can select one or more database to search. The Petroleum Abstracts® Tulsa Database has been selected.

Basic Search In Basic Search, enter free text search terms and OvidSP will use NLP, Natural Language Processing, when Include Related Terms is selected to search across the database or databases selected.

Basic Search - Results Search results are ranked and scored by relevancy to your search.

In Basic Search, you can search with Include Related Terms initially selected or you can broaden your search later using the Search Aid tool.

In Search Aid, narrow your search by subject, author, or journal, or add related terms to broaden your search

Find Citation – Search in one or many search fields. Dynamic Search tabs allow you to search in your preferred search mode.

Find Citation Results Search results are based on entries from one or more search fields.

Ovid Syntax Search with traditional Ovid Gateway or SilverPlatter (when available) command line syntax or simply make selections from fields, features and functions displayed. Fields, features and functions are database specific. In this example, we are going to use the Map Term to a Subject Heading feature.

The Mapping Display suggests controlled vocabulary terms used by the Petroleum Abstracts database to describe the original document indexed. The last entry on the Mapping Display offers the original term(s) that were entered in the search box, to be searched in the keyword fields. Mapping Display

Ovid Syntax To search in the Keyword fields, the default fields for the database(s) currently being searched, simply uncheck if selected the Map Term to Subject Heading feature. In this example, we are truncating the term, hydrocarbon*, by using the asterisk (*) from the three available unlimited right handed truncation symbols, asterisk (*), colon (:) or dollar sign ($) available in OvidSP. Note, the reminder on the page regarding truncation.

Boolean Operators and Limits Select search sets to be combined and simply select the and or or Boolean Operator located beneath the Search History. Note, the Boolean Operator not can be used from the command line. To add a Limit, expand the Limit option and select from the popular limits or from Additional Limits.

The worlds #1 scholarly search platform just got better. After selecting Additional Limits, from the Limit a Search display, select preferred limit setting(s). Limits are database specific to Petroleum Abstracts.

Save Search History Select the Save Search History button to Save your Search History. Note, if your account has the Personal Account featured enabled, you will be prompted to login or to create an account. Note: Only Basic Search, NLP searches, are ranked. Field searches are sorted by listing the last indexed record first.

Save Current Search to be run at a later time as an AutoAlert (when available) which is a current awareness search, Temporarily or P ermanently. or RSS (Really Simple Syndication) are delivery options for AutoAlerts.

Saved Search confirmation To run, re-execute, previously saved searches, select Saved Searches/Alerts button.

Searching GeoRef After selecting the Change Database button, from any of the main search pages, from the Select a database display select GeoRef.

Search Tools - database specific for GeoRef The Map Term to Subject Heading feature is available in both Search Tools and Ovid Syntax modes when searching in the 1785 to the present segment of GeoRef.

Search Fields – database specific for GeoRef In this example, Map Coordinates field is searched. Latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates are entered in the search box.

Ovid Syntax GeoRef database In this example, ironstone has been entered into the search box with the Map Term to Subject Heading feature selected.

Mapping Display – In GeoRef, the Auto Explode is set as a default (it can be disabled). Auto Explode – automatically uses the Boolean Operator or to search the selected Subject Heading and its Narrower Terms.

After selecting Additional Limits, from the Limit a Search display, select preferred limit setting(s). Limits are database specific to GeoRef.

Multifile Searching In OvidSP, you can search in a single database or many databases simultaneously. In this example, GeoRef, GeoRef InProcess and Petroleum Abstracts® TULSA databases have been selected.

Multifile Searching and Removing Duplicates OvidSP displays the full or short database name(s) of the database(s) selected. The Search History lists the details of the number of search results retrieved from each database searched. To Remove Duplicate records, records multiple databases have in common, select the Remove Duplicate button.

Removing Duplicates Preferences Individuals can select preferences for removing duplicates or accept the defaults.

Remove Duplicates - new search set is created After duplicates are removed, the unique result set is posted to the Search History page. You can review preferred, kept, and removed duplicates by selecting the Remove Duplicates button.

Results Manager – Manages output of bibliographic search From the Results Manager, select an Action to Print, Save or bibliographic results. Accept the defaults or customize your output. If you use EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite or Refworks, select Complete Reference and Direct Export. Annotate a result by clicking on the yellow icon. This feature maybe available if Personal Accounts are enabled for your site.
