Travel guide analysis The change between travel guides from the past and up- to-date travel guides

As an example, can you present some travel guides of the past and of today? Maybe then we can better understand the change between travel guides from the past and travel guides of today. Yes, sure! We will present you a travel guide of the past and of today about Sicily, Crete and London.

Here you can see the new travel guide from 2005 on the left and the old from 1979 on the right. The old one.

Sicily Travel guide in the past  from 1979 little handmade pictures  black and white small writing  construction:  23 % is general information Travel guide today  from 2005 many colourful pictures/photos  construction:  2 % is general information

From 2000 From 1978

Crete Travel guide in the past  from 1978 little handmade pictures  black and white small writing  construction:  28 % is general informa- tion Travel guide today  from pages many colourful pictures/photos  Construction:  5 % is general information

On the left sight is the old one from 1980 and on the right is the new one from 2012 Here the travel guide on the left is the new one and the guide on the right side is the old one. Here are photos from the old and new travel guide of London.

Here you see pages of the new travel guide. Here you can see pages of the old travel guide.

London Travel guide in the past  from 1980 little black and white handmade pictures small writing  construction:  50 % is general information Travel guide today  from 2012 many colourful and big pictures  construction:  13 % is general information

But are the contents of the travel guides from the past and of today the same? Which travel guides have which kind of information about what kind of sights? In which travel guides can you find more information about events and restaurants?

In travel guides of the past, you can find more pages with general information about a city or a country. For example: London % of the pages % of the pages

Travel guides of the past always have pieces of information about monuments, art and culture, sometimes there is very little information about shopping. The ones of today have more information about very famous sights and shopping malls.

In the travel guides of today, you can find out more about restaurants, pubs, events, parties and beaches than in the old ones.

So: Travel guides adjust themselves to the changing interests of the tourists visiting a city or a country.

Thank you for listening!!!
