What do all of these pictures have in common?

All of these are famous artworks that were painted during the Renaissance. What were the main characteristics of Renaissance art?

Renaissance Art The concept of Humanism changed art and literature. –What are the main points of Humanism?

Subjects became less religious: They also painted themes from ancient Greece and Rome, myths, and everyday life. They also included scientific and technological advances. –One example of this is Raphael’s School of Athens

They developed the idea of realism, where they painted people as they really were. –If you had warts, they painted warts; if you were old and had a big nose, they painted you that way. They used new types of paint, such as oils.

They also developed the idea of perspective: closer things were painted bigger than far away things. –Instead of having people in the back looking like they were floating, pictures looked 3-D, like you could walk into the picture.

In the Middle Ages, people were drawn floating (but the same size) to give a sense of distance. In the Renaissance, lines were drawn coming together, and people at the back were on the ground, and just smaller than those at front. This made the pictures look real.

Writing was meant to be understood, and was less religious in nature.
