Ocarina

What is an Ocarina?

What is it? A musical instrument made (usually) of clay It has a body, mouthpiece and 4-12holes Papua Niugini

Listen to an ocarina

History First ocarina – about 12,000 years ago Where-several cultures in South and Central America (Mayans, Aztecs and Incas) Found in India about 5,000BCE Usually looked like animals

Ancient Ocarinas

Ancient Ocarinas

Newer Ocarinas

How do they make noise? The fipple splits the air stream, half the airstream goes into the chamber or body, while the other half exits, this creates air vibrations that make the tones we hear By uncovering holes you change the pressure and therefore the vibrations change

Our Project Create an Ocarina: Must make tones Must have 4 holes for different tones Must look like an animal Must correctly sit up on a flat surface
