To establish that counseling services are essential and counselors are not merely support staff. Counselors contribute to this goal by providing services that will enhance the success of each child. Counselors use guided activities to help students reach goals. Counselors provide students with information about career opportunities, assess student interests and abilities, and encourage exploration. 5 Comprehensive School Counseling Programs Personal and Social Development Counseling programs need to facilitate the personal and social development of students. Counselors help students with identity and self-esteem issues. Counselors are on the front line to help students with social concerns such as teen suicide and pregnancy, depression, substance abuse and STD’s. Many counselors use their creativity and own funds to supply materials as school counseling budgets are often inadequate. Counselors share resources such as commercially produced kits, tests, films games, etc., to help defray costs.
