When we read novels, we look for The author (point out some facts concerning life and creative work, the literary trend the author belongs to) Plot Setting Characterization Theme Idea Narrator’s point of view

Plot is a sequence of events in which the characters are involved, the theme and the idea are revealed. At its simplest, “what happens why” Story = what happens Structure = how the plot is revealed in the narrative Sequence: how things happen in the plot or structure

The Plot has Falling Action Resolution (Denouement) Exposition Complication (Conflict) Intensified by Rising Action Climax

Setting includes the historical moment in time and geographic location in which a story takes placehistorical moment in timegeographic locationstory (When it was written Where it was written)

Characterizat ion Is the character “flat” or “round”? Decide whether the character’s actions are wise or unwise What is the character’s motivation Consider the effects of the character’s behavior on other characters Look for repeatedly used words that describe the character Be aware of items associated with the character Read between the lines Consider the historical time period of the character

Theme is the represented aspect of life an interaction of human characters under certain circumstances The theme of a literary work can be easily understood from the plot of the work.

Key Facts All events are told in the past from Jane’s point of view. The setting is early 19 th Century England. Jane Eyre is classified as both a Gothic and a Romantic novel.

PLOT Exposition is when Jane is sent to Logwood because it causes more drama and problems. For instance there is not enough money to keep all of these people in the orphanage and be able to feed and clothe all of them. She also finds a friend Helen. This is where a lot of her problems defiantly begin though. This is a great leading into the rising action.

PLOT Rising Action The rising action begins when Jane becomes a governess for Adele. Her boss is a very secretive man named Rochester, whom she falls in love with. He brings home another woman, and is very surprised when he proposes to her and not Blance ( the other woman)

PLOT Climax There are many mini climaxes. The one that makes the most impact on the book that everything leads up to would be when Jane calls of the wedding, due to Rochester already being married. Another Climax when Jane gets her second marriage proposal.

PLOT Falling Action Jane ends up marrying Rochester after hearing his name, she knows that he is the one for her and keeps finding herself devoted to him. She goes to find him and they get married.

PLOT Resolution Jane and Rochester get married

SETTING This book takes place in the early 19 th century, there are many different places where they are, but the main places are all in England.

THEMES Themes of the book that really stood out are Love Family Social Class Religion Gender

CHARACTERS Jane Eyre- The Main Character Edward Rochester- Jane’s Employer St. John Rivers- Helps Jane thought the book Mrs. Reed- Jane’s cruel aunt Bessie Lee- The maid Georgina and Eliza Reed- Jane’s mean cousins Helen Burns- James Best Friend

JANE EYRE She has such a passion for life even when everything in her own life is not as ideal as she would like it. She struggles with many things in her own life such as, not enough gender or social equality. She was left homeless at a young age, and also struggles thought the book of knowing what she really wants.
