Information Literacy Workshop SMAD 201: Class Exercise (v.1) Kathy Hughes & Jennifer Keach

Course: SMAD 201 Fundamental Skills in Media Arts & Design I Required, intro-level course for all majors Enrollment: sophomores and juniors Focus: Graphic design principles, color theory, typography, and software skills (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver)

Assignment Goal Students will create a 3-fold brochure in InDesign to promote an individual or event prior to In support of this brochure, students will submit documentation that tracks their steps and provides APA formatted citations for the references used.

Purpose / Learning Objectives Implement design principles, as discussed in class, in the layout and development Demonstrate ability to use InDesign Identify and utilize available library resources Evaluate quality of resources (authority, bias, timeliness, on-topic) Cite sources properly Explain the legal re-use of images

Evaluation Criteria Select at least 3 images from a variety of sources and appropriate to the topic Integrate these images into the brochure using the design principles presented in class Explain necessary process for securing rights to publish these images Identify and incorporate information about the subject from at least 3 different high quality sources (discussed in class) Cite sources both within the summary and in the brochure according to appropriate style (discussed in class)
