Ukrainian Orthodox Music of Baroque Period

The baroque period in Ukraine The baroque period in Ukraine covers the span from the end of XVI century to the first part of XVII century Changes in the church music in XVII – XVIII centuries may with certainty be called cardinal

The Ortodox music The mass in orthodox church is accompanied only by chorus singing (unlike catholic church, where the mass is accompanied by the organ performance). So when we talk about orthodox church music, we mean singing.

Multivoiced chorus singing During the baroque period the multivoiced chorus singing became more popular (earlier the one-part singing, the church monophony, was more prevalent) Polyphonic music becomes widely distributed

The number of parts The so-called "part song polyphony " was born. The number of parts could vary from 3-4 to 48 parts. Each part (tenor, bass, etc) was written out separately on a sheet or sewn together into a book. This is a sample of a book like those.

this is how the book looks like inside

Music that speaks to the soul Music of the baroque period was emotional, full of dynamics and contrasts. It had a great influence on the listener with its more expressive and emotionality. The part song creators were aspiring to touch the deepest feelings of the person's soul, to provoke the feeling of upheaval, greatness, compassion and love…

The five-line musical notation The five-line musical notation becomes distributed The five-line musical notation has been used in Ukraine since the end of the XVI century. This so-called notae “musicae ruthenorum”, the Rus or Kyiv type of the general European chorale-mensural notation.

The most authoritative and popular theoretician of the second half of the XVII century who generalized the professional church music practice of that time was Mykola Dyletskyi (this is the page of his book).

Sheet music printing By the end of XV century typography, and later sheet music printing develops in Ukraine. "these are books which are called Irmologions, they are the first printed sheet music volumes"(printed in Lviv).
