Getting to Know the Advanced Search Screen Don’t know what you are looking for? You can browse NoveList’s full collection by Subject, Author, Series, Titles, or Dewey using the links in the Browse panel.

Searching

Searching using only limiters If you are looking for a list of titles that fit certain criteria and the topic or genre does not matter, try an Advanced Search using only limiters. Let’s try a search to find all titles with a Lexile Reading Level between 300 and 500. Scroll down to the Limit Your Results section and select from the Lexile Reading Level limiter. Click Search to find all books within that range.

Searching using only limiters Or you can find titles based on the author’s nationality or cultural identity. At the Limit Your Results section and select an African-American from the Author’s Cultural Identity limiter. Also select Teens and Older Kids from the Reading Level limiter (hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard to select more than one option). Click Search to find all books at these reading levels by African-American authors.

Searching with Multiple Limiters You can use the Advanced Search to search a combination of limiters to help filter books for the appropriate audience. For example, you can find books for a patron who is reading above their grade level, such as a 2 nd grader reading at a 5 th grade level. Select Younger Kids from the Reading Level limiter. Then, from the Lexile Reading Level limiter, select Click the Search button.

Over 450 titles fit these criteria. Searching with Multiple Limiters

Simple Searches at the Advanced Search You can do a simple search from the Advanced Search page, but you have more options for selecting which field(s) to search. For example, you can limit your search to only find titles that have the subject heading Graphic Novels. Enter Graphic Novels in the first Find bar, and select SU Subject from the drop-down. At the Limit Your Results section, select Teens from the Reading Level limiter. Enter Graphic Novels in the first Find bar, and select SU Subject from the drop-down. At the Limit Your Results section, select Teens from the Reading Level limiter.

Simple Searches at the Advanced Search Over 3,000 titles match this criteria. Sort your list by Popularity to bring the most popular graphic novels to the top of your Result List.

If you want to find of easy readers that have been reviewed by a particular journal, you can do an Advanced Search of reviews and subject headings. Enter the journal name in the Find bar, School Library Journal for example, and select RV Review from the drop-down. To narrow your search to easy readers, add another line to your search, enter easy readers and select RV Review. Simple Searches at the Advanced Search At the Limit Your Results section, select Older Kids from the Reading Level limiter. Click the Search button.

Simple Searches at the Advanced Search Over 80 titles fit these criteria, many of which are part of a series.

Searching for a Genre that is Unfamiliar You have a teenage patron who is interested in finding more fantasy books to read, but the patron is not interested in graphic novels. You can create a search to find Teen books at the appropriate level of difficulty. Limit to the Teens Reading Level. Then, from the Lexile Reading Level limiter, select the Lexile ranges that match the patron’s reading ability (hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard to select more than one). Click the Search button. In the first Find bar enter Fantasy and select GN Genre. In the second line select NOT, enter Graphic Novels, and select SU Subject.

Again, you can sort your list by Popularity to find the most popular titles. Or sort by Publication Date to find the newest Fantasy titles. Searching for a Genre that is Unfamiliar

Finding Adult Titles for Young Adults To find adult books that are suitable for young adult readers, you can combine a review search with the Reading Level limiter. Some reviews describe the reading level as “Adult/high school,” so we could search reviews for that phrase to find appropriate titles. Enter Adult/high school in the first Find bar and select RV Review. You can optionally add a subject to the next line to focus your search, for example enter London, England and select SU Subject from the drop-down. Select Adults from the Reading Level limiter.

Searching for Series Read-alikes Readers often want books similar to the ones they have read and enjoyed. By searching reviews for mention of a series, but weeding out all titles by the series author, you can find titles by other authors that are similar to your readers’ favorites. Enter “Gossip Girl” (in quotes to search it as a phrase) in the first Find bar and select RV Review, to find reviews that mention the Gossip Girl series. In the second line select NOT, type in Von Ziegesar, Cecily and select AU Author from the drop-down. This will omit titles by Von Ziegesar. Limit your search to the Teens Reading Level and click Search.

Searching for Series Read-alikes Remember, this is a keyword search of reviews, excluding all titles by Cecily von Ziegesar. We recommend that you search the reviews for the series name to determine whether these books are good suggestions for your reader.

Finding Books by the Type of Illustration Type watercolor into the first Find bar, and select RV Review from the drop-down menu. At the Limit Your Results section, select Younger Kids from the Reading Level limiter. You can also mine the reviews to locate books with a particular type of illustration, such as watercolor or pen-and-ink. This search can be useful for a collaboration with an art teacher.

Finding Books by the Type of Illustration This search pulls up close to 3,000 titles. Sort by popularity to bring the most popular titles to the top of your list. Make sure to read the reviews for each title, to determine whether it is a good example of watercolor illustration.

Searching for Quick Reads Let’s say you have a middle school student who has to read a book for an assignment, but doesn’t have much time. You can use a combination of several limiters to find a list of titles. Select Teens and Older Kids from the Reading Level limiter, and set the Number of Pages limiter to less than 250 pages. In the first Find bar enter starred review and select RV Review. In the second line select AND, enter gr. 5-8, and select RV Review. In the third line select OR, enter ages 10-14, and select RV Review.

Searching Based on Appeal Factors If you have a patron who wants to find titles that are fast-paced or have strong characters, but doesn’t care what the book is about, you can search our reviews for these appeal factors. For example, let’s say a patron is looking for titles that make her laugh. Enter “laugh out loud” (in quotes to search it as a phrase) in the first Find bar and select RV Review from the drop-down menu. Limit your search to the Teens Reading Level and click Search.

Searching Based on Appeal Factors These titles would be great for a “LOL” book display.

Searching for an Illustrator In the first Find bar, enter Eric Carle and select AK Targeted Author Search from the drop- down menu. The Result List will include all of the books that Eric Carle has authored and illustrated, as well as those that he had just illustrated. Let’s say you are looking for books by a particular illustrator. You can use the Advanced Search to find all titles written and illustrated by that person.

Searching for an Illustrator In the first Find bar, enter Eric Carle, and select OC Other Contributor from the drop- down menu. This search will pull up those titles for which Carle is the illustrator, but not the author. You can also use the Advanced Search to find only those titles that Eric Carle has illustrated, omitting the titles he has written.
