What Should I Read Next? For Ridgedale Local Schools Libraries

Locating the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) Go to the Ridgedaleschools.org Click on Click on Library in left column Select High School or Elementary Online Catalog

Suppose you REALLY liked Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Click on the cat’s paw. Cat Jr. is the an icon driven search. Type in Hatchet in the search box Searches can be sorted by author, new to old, title, etc. Click on Title Find Hatchet in the search results Click on the title

Here you’ll see. Brief Description.. A Look Inside... Full Description Hatchet / Gary Paulsen. Paulsen, Gary. After a plane crash, 13-year-old Brian spends 54 days in the Canadian wilderness, surviving with only the aid of a hatchet, and learning also to deal with his parents' divorce. A Newbery Honor Book; ALA Notable Children's Book; ALA Best of the Best for Young Adults; "Booklist" editors' Choice; Physical Description : 195 p. cm. Reading Program : Accelerated Reader MG Level : 5.7

In Brief Description (left blue tab) you’ll find Title Author Brief description of the story Pages, book dimensions Accelerated Reader levels

In Look Inside (middle tab) A summary of the book Newer books have book reviews from teacher and librarian book selection journals Some entries include author biographies Newer entries may also include excerpts or the entire first chapter

In Full Description you’ll also see Full cataloging information, ISBN Publisher information Subject heading Series information

If you want to read more by Paulsen Look in the box to the right. Below the word Keep Click on Find more by this author Items with the Same Author will appear in the box to the left.

Or click on Find more on these topics This matches the subject headings in the catalog entry and finds other books with the same subject headings. In this case more books about survival or about divorce.

Nearby items on the shelf This will show you what books are shelved around this book. This is more helpful with nonfiction books. Since you are not likely to know the titles of nonfiction books on a particular topic finding them by their subject matter is essential.

Back to the main page… Click on New Search. Important: Using the Browser back button will interrupt your search

Reading Level Search In the box to the right click on Reading level search. Here you'll find books by Lexile (click the button), Accelerated Reader and Reading Counts. This is a helpful tool but is not exact. You may need to fine tune your parameters since it may give you LOTS of results. Subject terms need to be very general-- dogs instead of Yorkshire terriers.

Visual search 4 kids This will open a palette of pictures which illustrate book subjects found in your library only. Click on animals. Here you see a wide range of animal topics. Great for the kid who can’t think what they want to read next.

What Others Are Reading As books are checked out this area will show the top 20 titles, topics and authors that our students are reading. Also a great way for kids to find books to read.

More options With teacher permission, students my borrow items from either the High school, or elementary library. The catalogs may be accessed as an App. See Mrs. Miller. E-books are available for download. Recommended reading lists can be found at the bottom of the main page and those in our collection are indicated

Look up the sequel to a favorite book at For Accelerated Reader levels Google search on AR Lookup Or Ask a friend, a teacher or your Librarian what they enjoyed reading.

Happy Reading!!! Mrs. Campbell, Elementary Librarian Mrs. Miller, District Library Media Specialist
