DO NOW: NAME SOME FAVORITE STORIES FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD. WHY DID YOU ENJOY THESE STORIES? Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1

Concept: Each of the prophets had a message for God’s people. Isaiah of Judah called the people to care for the needs of all those who suffered. He told them since they remained loyal to God while exiled in Babylon he would restore them to their former glory. The Book of Malachi calls the people to worship God and be just. Malachi means “my messenger.” The Book of Obadiah presents the hope for the survival of the Jewish people as the Edomites were settling in Southern Judah.

Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 The Book of Daniel reminds us that people are able to be faithful to their religious traditions even in a foreign land. The story tells of hope and the importance of our behavior. In The Book of Esther we learn of hope. The Jews were to be destroyed by the King of Persia, and Esther’s prayers and fasting appealed to the king to spare the Jews. This day that the Jews were to be killed would be decided by casting lots, or in Hebrew, purim.

Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 Storytelling is a way that the biblical writers help people understand their relationship with God. The stories deal with the issue of God’s providence. Providence is God’s constant care for and protection of his people.

Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 The Story of Tobit – Tobit’s hymn praised God for his providence. A man who loses his wealth and sight asks God to take his life. The Story of Judith – Judith helps the Jews defend themselves against the Assyrians who were ready to conquer the Jews. She was the last to stay at an Assyrian banquet with their commander, and saves the Jews. The Story of Jonah – Jonah refused to be one of God’s prophets to save the people of Nineveh. He sails away, but is thrown overboard and swallowed by a large fish. After 3 days the fish coughed him up. God sent him back to Nineveh.

Chapter 18 ~ Lesson 1 Summarize the stories of: Tobit, Judith, and Jonah. (Three individual summaries) Vocabulary: Parable: short story that has a message
