“To encourage the artistic expression of the African American experience via literature and the graphic arts, including biographical, historical and social history treatments by African American authors and illustrators.”

Born: April 27, 1927 American author, activist and civil rights leader. Played the trumpet, piano and sang chorus. Valedictorian Wife of civil rights leader Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize. Established “The King Center” which was dedicated to the ideas of peace, justice and equality. In 1970, the ALA began awarding the Coretta Scott King award to outstanding African American writers and illustrators of children’s literature.

Established in 1969 Presented annually by the Ethnic & Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table which is part of the American Library Association (ALA). CSK award was created to honor African American authors and illustrators who create outstanding books for young children and adults. These awards are given to commemorate the life and work of civil rights leader, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her continuing efforts in working for peace and civil rights issues.

What kind of books are eligible for the Coretta Scott King Award? 1.Must portray an aspect of the Black experience- past, present or future. 2.Must be written/illustrated by an African American 3.Book must have been published in the preceding year. 4.Must meet established standards of quality writing for youth which include:  Clear plot.  Well drawn characters, which portray growth and development during the course of the story.  Writing style which is consistent with and suitable to the age intended.  Accuracy.

5. Must be written for a youth audience in one of three categories: Preschool-grade 4 Grades 5-8 Grades Author or illustrator must live in the U.S. or maintain dual residency/citizenship. 7. Illustrations should reflect established qualitative standards identified in the statement below: Illustrations should... “heighten and extend the readers' awareness of the world around him. They should lead him to an appreciation of beauty.

The ALA Constitution states the purpose of ALA as: “The object of the American Library Association shall be to promote library service and librarianship.” The stated mission is, “To provide leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.” (Retrieved from
