CHILDREN LITERATURE TITLE : ABUELA AUTHOR: ARTHUR DORROS ILUSTRATED BY: ELISA KLEVEN AGE: KINDERGARTEN BY : HELENA MARTINEZ

WHY ABUELA? I chose Abuela because it involves some multicultural parts, such as: words in Spanish, where some people come from, where some food are imported from and how they get here. I think these topics are important to students to learn, it helps them to understand why people speak different languages and value other cultures. I like to see how little children can use their amazing imagination. Also because I have been a dreamer all my life, I like fantasy, it doesn’t like realism.

UTAH STATE STANDART Recognize fantasy and realism. Tell about adventures they have had. Recognize characters and settings. Ask and answer questions about details in the story. Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories. Recognize the main topic.

OBJECTIVES Using Imagination. Adventure. Things we can see in the city. Things we can see in a harbor. Transportation. Culture. New words.

BACKGROUND FOR TEACHERS Children need to be exposed to other cultures and traditions, making connections through music, dance, arts. New vocabulary.

ABUELA = GRANDMOTHER

AIRPORT

HARBOR

CITY

FLOCK

MATERIALS Cotton balls. Glue. Blue construction paper. Crayons Popsicle sticks. Markers. White paper. Pencils.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES Introduce the book. Introduce author and illustrator. Explain what authors and illustrators do. Read the book. Ask students who the characters are. With support ask where the story took place. Explain the meaning of the amazing words. Help students to use the words in a sentence. Ask students about different kinds of transportation.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES Ask students to point: airport, harbor, city, flock. Explain fantasy and realism. Explain about Abuela culture. Tell students that some kind of food we eat here are imported from different countries, and they use boats and ships to transport them.

FAMILY CONNECTIONS Students will take home an activity to do with family members using their imagination. IF I COULD FLY WITH MY FAMILY I WOULD TAKE THEM TO……………………..

ASSESSMENT PLAN Show students two different scenes, one is fantasy and the other is realism, then ask them which one is fantasy and which one is realism. Ask questions like: If you go Japan what kind of transportation do you need? Do you need fly to come to school? Do you see airplanes at the harbor? Do you go to the airport to get on a boat? What do you see in a city? Why does Abuela speak Spanish?
