How did my child qualify for reading support? Based on universal screening results –AIMSweb Letter Naming Fluency Letter Sound Fluency Phoneme Segmentation Fluency Nonsense Word Fluency Oral Reading Fluency (R-CBM) –Developmental Spelling Assessment –Reading Street Baseline Group Test –Dolch Words

Focus Phonics - Project Read Program or Orton Gillingham Program Dolch Word Recognition - Word Ring Word Study/Spelling - Word Sorts & iPad Apps

Project Read & Orton Multisensory approach (e.g. sand tray, felt paper, glue letters, skywriting, finger spelling) Bonnie Kline Stories Decodable Books to match unit materials

Word Rings Words come from Dolch Word List 10 words at a time (can be modified as needed) They are checked in class - 3 marks on the back and the word is “retired” Memory Boxes

Leveled Books Practice Books on the weekends (one level lower for independent reading) Sent home for 2 nights in a row for fluency & comprehension reinforcement

Word Study - Sorts Used to help students identify spelling and phonics patterns in words. Assist in spelling instruction

Fluency The ability to read a text smoothly, easily, correctly, and at the right pace (accuracy, rate, and expression) Allows reading to sound like speaking The bridge between word recognition and comprehension Necessary for enjoyable reading

Homework Students have HW each night Usually consists of: –A book to read –Word/Phrase ring to practice –Finish a worksheet or sort from class What do I do when HW takes too long or it is too difficult for my child that night?
