Pg.33 Set up Chp.6 & 7 Title Page Include titles of both Chp.6 and 7 from book Include 3 pictures, 3 colors, 3 key words (total) Use book Chp.6&7

IN: Pg.34 Think back to cell organelles… What is the function of the mitochondria?

Title them: Chp.7-Energy in the Cell & Cellular Respiration Pg.35 Set up Cornell notes Title them: Chp.7-Energy in the Cell & Cellular Respiration

Energy is transformed (changed into different forms) in living things all the time. For example, the chemical energy in food is transformed into the movement of your muscles. Plants take the radiant energy from the sun and turn it into chemical energy when they make food in photosynthesis. Any time energy is transformed, most of it is “lost” to the environment as heat.

How does the cell get energy? The cell gets energy from carbon containing compounds-Mostly from the sugar, glucose (C6H12O6). Glucose is a high energy molecule. When the bonds in it are broken, energy is released.

What is the difference between an autotroph and a heterotroph? Autotrophs make food through the process of photosynthesis. Heterotrophs eat other organisms to get energy.

What is cell respiration? Occurs in the mitochondria. C6H12O6 + O2 36ATP + H2O + CO2 + HEAT Glucose + oxygen Energy + water + carbon dioxide + heat

What is fermentation? Two types: Fermentation produces energy when there is no oxygen Occurs in the cytoplasm. Two types: Alcoholic fermentation Glucose CO2 + alcohol + 2ATP Lactic acid fermentation Glucose lactic acid + 2 ATP

Finish Cornell Notes Write 3 questions Write 3 sentence summary

Homework Work on 3 column vocab  due Mon

OUT Where do plants get their energy? Where do animals get their energy? What is the main purpose of cell respiration?

Friday 11-15 Enzyme Test Retakes  everyday before or after school till THURSDAY! Chp.6&7 test is next Wednesday INB Check Wednesday

Objective Explain that photosynthesis uses light energy to convert CO2 and water to sugar.

REVIEW

IN: Pg.38 Think back to cell organelles… What is the function of the chloroplast?

Set up Cornell Notes – Pg.39 Title them: Chp.6 Photosynthesis

What is photosynthesis? The process in which glucose is made from the sun’s energy. Occurs in the chloroplast in plants. 6H2O + 6CO2 + light C6H12O6 + 6O2 Water + carbon dioxide +light glucose + oxygen

The steps of photosynthesis are: Step 1 = Chlorophyll captures light energy from the sun Step 2 = Use CO2 to produce glucose

The glucose from photosynthesis then enters the mitochondria to complete cell respiration (O2 present) to make energy… or enters the cytoplasm to complete fermentation (no O2 present) to make energy.

Do plants do photosynthesis? Do animals do photosynthesis? Do plants do cell respiration? Do animals do cell respiration?

Do plants do photosynthesis? Do animals do photosynthesis? Do plants do cell respiration? Do animals do cell respiration?

Finish Cornell Notes 3 questions in left column 3-sentence summary at bottom

Photosynthesis & Cell Respiration Diagram Pg.40: Pg.41: Photosynthesis & Cell Respiration Diagram Glue in Label Summary Products Reactants Equation Location in Cell Type of Cell Photosynthesis Cell Respiration Energy in the Cell

1. Label each column with the name of an energy process 1. Label each column with the name of an energy process. Photosynthesis Respiration Type of Cell -does the process occur in autotrophic cells, heterotrophic cells or both? Location in Cell - what organelle or structure does the process occur in? Reactants- What compounds are the raw materials of the reaction. (What is needed?) Equation-write the balanced equation for the reaction. Products -list the products that are made. Summary -summarize the entire process. Include definition of the process and include all the steps of the process and a brief overview of what happens during each.
