 How do animals store Energy? Plants?  What gas do animals breath in and what gas do animals breath out during the day? What about at night? 1

2

1. Plants use photosynthesis to make sugars 2. Photosynthesis is a process that captures energy from sunlight to make sugars that store chemical energy 3

3. Equation for whole photosynthetic process 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 (sugar)+ 6O 2 Identify the reactants and the products. 4

1. Photosynthesis in plants occurs in chloroplasts a. Takes place in two parts: stroma and thylokoid 2. Most chloroplasts are in leaf cells chloroplast stroma grana (thylakoids) 5

1. Plant produce food for themselves and other organisms. Where does ALL the energy originate from? 6

 All energy comes from the SUN! 7

2. Regulates Earth’s environment (removes carbon dioxide from Earth’s atmosphere) 8

Factors that Affect Photosynthesis Temperature As temperature increases, the rate of photosynthesis increases to a maximum and then decreases when temps get too hot. –The rate peaks at a certain temperature, at which many of the enzymes that catalyze the reactions become ineffective. Also, the stomata begin to close, limiting water loss and entry of carbon dioxide. 9

Which graph represents the affect of temperature on the rate of photosynthesis? 10

Draw this graph in your notes 11

Factors that Affect Photosynthesis Light Intensity Rate of photosynthesis increases as light intensity increases However, at some point all available e- are excited, and the maximum rate of photosynthesis is reached 12

Which of the graphs represents the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis? 13

Draw the circled image in your notes 14
