Periodic Trends

Curriculum Big Idea: Periodic trends in the properties of atoms allow for the prediction of physical and chemical properties. Concept: Chemical periodicity is the basis for the arrangement of the periodic table. Concept: Trends in the periodic table can predict the properties and behaviors of elements.

Today’s Agenda (half days today and tomorrow) Opener: Answer the “What Do You Think?” Question in the Periodic Trends Packet. Discuss your answers in small groups and as a class. For You To Do: Make a graph of ionic radius versus atomic number, and use the graph to identify periodic and group trends. Complete the Periodic Trends Packet. Closure: How do atomic radii of elements change as you move from left to right across a period (row) on the periodic table. Explain the reason for this trend.
