 Photosynthesis removes CO 2 from the atmosphere and Cellular Respiration puts it back.  Photosynthesis releases oxygen and Cellular Respiration uses that oxygen to release energy from food.  ALL CELLS CARRY OUT Cellular Respiration.  Autotrophs make their own food to use in Cellular Respiration.  Heterotrophs have to ingest that food to carry out Cellular Respiration.

Diffusion  Molecules of a substance move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration. This process will continue until equilibrium is reached. No energy is required by the cell.

Osmosis  Diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane.

Facilitated Diffusion  The process that helps large molecules pass through the membrane. Protein molecules act as channels for large molecules to pass from one side of the membrane to the other side. No energy is required by the cell.

Active Transport  Energy is required to transport materials across the cell membrane. Movement of molecules is against the concentration differences.

Selective Permeability  A Selectively permeable membrane is one in which some substances can pass through the membrane and some cannot.
