8 Evie 8 Evie is a hard-working student, but is not entirely academic. She is interested in becoming a social worker or nurse, and attends a science college.

11 Christos 11 Christos attends an inner-city comprehensive. He is a hard-working student who likes hands- on learning. He is fascinated by human behaviour and thinks he might like to become a professional psychologist.

12 Progression route: Christos' Diploma course has got him really interested in Applied Psychology but also in the area of Social Policy. He is now looking for honours degree courses that offer the chance to combine both. Work experience A placement in the local infants school. AND... principal learning; functional skills; personal, learning and thinking skills Extended Project A SHD Diploma teamwork project plan for a local infant school's Healthy Eating initiative. Having observed groups of infants over half a term and read about language and learning, Christos contributed a "Language and Learning" plan to help persuade the children to enjoy eating fruit and vegetables. In his presentation to the school's governors, he persuaded them that such a plan warranted development and piloting. 14 Ben 14 Ben is a conscientious student who attends a rural comprehensive and has an interest in criminology. At present he is unclear as to his future career, but is considering entering the Police service or Scenes of Crime work.

15 Progression route: Ben's work experience and interest in sport has prompted him to consider undertaking a BA in Applied Criminology with Sport or alternatively Applied Criminology with Forensic Investigation. Work experience Placement with the Youth Offending Team in his local town. Ben is a very good footballer and captains his village side and also helps with coaching the under-13 side. AND... principal learning; functional skills; personal, learning and thinking skills Extended Project An investigation into the impact of sport in alleviating youth crime within a rural area. GCE A level in Sociology And GCE AS level in Biology Additional and/or Specialist learning

17 Ewan 17 Ewan is a determined young man. He has done reasonably well in his GCSEs, given that his inner-city comprehensive is located in a challenging area. He is exasperated but deeply interested by the social problems in his community. He helps out with the local Boys Brigade and would like to get involved in youth work in some way. But first he is intent on getting a degree.

18 Progression route: Ewan has gained real insight into how agencies work together. His own interaction with his community led him to want to work in community support or youth justice. The study skills he has developed have made him intent on looking for work in one of these areas while studying for a Foundation Degree in Community Justice. Work experience A placement with a community project helping to set up a music studio for local young people. AND... principal learning; functional skills; personal, learning and thinking skills Extended Project A dissertation on "The Effects of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on a Local Community", including desk research and interviews with local community workers and representatives.
