 The Lewis and Clark journey is well known today. There hard work and exploration opened up the West to new settlers. Along the way they interacted and met many tribes of Indians. They traveled the Missouri river after starting their journey in St. Louis, Missouri. You can still see the memorial today in Fort Benton, Montana. They helped to encourage manifest destiny by opening up the West to new settlers who wanted land and to start a new life.

 The Alamo was the war fought for Texas Independence. It occurred in San Antonio, Texas. This was a large part in westward expansion. Led by Sam Houston, the Texans lost due to poor backup. Texas was fighting for their freedom from Mexico. They were tired of having to abide by Mexico’s laws. The Texans made a stride to break free and have their own independence.

 The Rio Grande was the location of the start of the Mexican War. War was between the Mexicans and Texans. Due to this, many troops and men came to fight for Texas. Eighteen minutes after the war began, it was over. Texans had defeated the Mexicans. Due to this, Texas was freed from Mexico’s power. This caused many people to move west and encourage the manifest destiny.

 Sutter’s mill was the location at which the California gold rush started in One of the mill builders was inspecting the ditch when he saw a shiny substance at the bottom of the water. He then noticed it was gold. This triggered thousands of people to pour into Sutter’s mill hoping to strike it rich. Most people found nothing and were soon broke. This encouraged manifest destiny because it encouraged many people to move westward.

 Independence Missouri was a very important place to thousands of American Settlers. This city marked the beginning of the Oregon Trail. Many Americans traveled this trail hoping to start a new life and claim good fertile land out west. Thousands of Americans traveled this trail each year. This encouraged manifest destiny because it encouraged people to move westward in search of new land and a new life.

 Andrew Jackson was a very cruel man to the Indians. He signed a bill into law that allowed Americans to take the Indians land for a growing nation. They took the Indians land and forced them to move elsewhere. The trail that the Indians traveled when they left was later named the “Trail of Tears”. Many Indians died on this trail, but mostly the young and elderly. This incident encouraged manifest destiny because it caused the Indians to want to move West in search of new land.

 Lewis and Clark were the original builders of Fort Clatsop. The party spent the winter there and in spring, headed back East. Fort Clatsop was named after the Clatsop Indians. This fort encouraged manifest destiny because it strengthened the United States claim and paved the way for the early American Settlers.
