What is Sheltered Instruction? Sheltered instruction is an approach for teaching CONTENT to English Language Learners (ELLs) using strategies: that make the subject matter easier to understand AND that promote the students’ English language development.

What is the SIOP Model? Research-based framework (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) Identifies 8 components and 30 indicators of effective instruction in the K-12 content areas Fits well with existing initiatives

SIOP ® Model Components Preparation Building Background Comprehensible Input Strategies Interaction Practice Lesson Delivery Assessment

A common response…. SIOP is JUST good teaching

SIOP is good teaching PLUS + Purposeful teaching of the language necessary for English Learners to understand content.

A LEP student can not fail a course if she/he has not been provided instructional and testing accommodations to the student. Remember that….

Dates for SIOP At AMS 8/17 and 20 District (limited to 4 or so from each campus) August 12 & 13
