Multiplying or Dividing Integers ©2008 by Kelly Howarth

“Hello! There is a REALLY EASY way to make sure you get this right every time! And, believe it or not, you can remember this rule by thinking about going out on a date!”

“See this cute couple? They think it is a POSITIVE thing that it is just the two of them together!” “You can think that anytime you multiply or divide with an EVEN number of negatives, your answer will be POSITIVE!”

“We have examples for you to enjoy!”

“That’s nice, but what happens if I multiply or divide with an ODD number of negative numbers? “Yeah, I think it’s really NEGATIVE when my date brings along her baby brother or worse...one of her parents! AUGHH!” “Hey, I’m a COOL BABY! I even have cool drool!”

“Oh, I get it now! Just like it’s a negative to have an odd number of people on your date, mathematically, when you multiply or divide by an ODD number of negatives, then your answer is negative.”

“So, I, the Baby will summarize this for you today! When you multiply or divide with an EVEN number of negative numbers, your answer will be POSITIVE! When you multiply or divide with an ODD number of negative numbers, your answer will be NEGATIVE! EZ DEAL! Makes me want to drool and burp with delight!”
