PRINCIPLES Country based approach & ownership Mainstream Environmental Management in SLM Strengthen Enabling Environment Support Targeted Institution Capacity Building Shift from Project to programmatic approach Harmonize donor project cycles for cost effectiveness

OBJECTIVE Assist countries to address land degradation issues in a comprehensive & integrated manner based on national priorities, e.g. National Action Plans (NAPs)

ACTIVIES Package of interventions to address Land Degradation (LD) Policy, Regulatory and Institutional reforms Capacity building Investments Financed in a coordinated way by Governments, Donors,Bilaterals & Multilaterals

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES Mainstream Land Management – policies, etc. Adopt integrated approaches to land and water Promote synergies across sectors Promote predictable financing Reduce transaction costs through harmonization Strengthen enabling environment Scale up traditional practices Facilitate replication

CRITERIA FOR PILOT COUNTRIES Country must have NAPs, Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRSPs), etc. Evidence of strong political will County committed financially Support from donors

STREAMLINE PROCEDURES Countries and donors to harmonize procedures GEF will adopt expedited procedures, e.g. Danube Project/China Council approves framework Chief Executive Officer (CEO) approves individual projects
