The Study of Life MYP Honors Biology: Unit 1

Science is a Means of Inquiry Science is a method for discovering reliable knowledge about nature All scientists follow the steps of the scientific method in their investigations

Biology: The Science of Life Biology is the branch of science which focuses on the study of life and living things (organisms) All organisms share certain characteristics

Life is Diverse The Biosphere refers to all parts of Earth where life can exist Biodiversity refers to the variety of life forms in a given area – Currently over 9.7 million known species on Earth!

Made of Cells… A cell is the smallest functional unit of life All organisms are made up of one (unicellular) or more cells (multicellular)— you’re made up of more than 100,000,000,000,000 !

Have Metabolism (Use Energy)… All organisms have metabolism, meaning they use energy. (metabolism is the reactions that break down food molecules to release useable energy)

Maintain Homeostasis… Organisms can maintain homeostasis (stable internal conditions) – EX: Body temperature, blood glucose, pH

Grow & Develop… All organisms grow and develop

Respond to their Environment… Individual organisms respond to their environment and react to biotic and abiotic factors.

Adapt & Evolve… Populations of organisms develop adaptations and evolve over long periods of time.

Reproduce… All organisms can reproduce (sexually or asexually) and pass on DNA to offspring.

Life is Organized

Biosphere (all areas of life on Earth) – BIOME (ecosystems in similar geographic and climate regions) ECOSYSTEM (all organisms & abiotic factors in area) – COMMUNITY (all organisms in an area) » POPULATION  Us! ORGANISMS  You! ORGAN SYSTEMS ORGANS TISSUE CELLS  LIFE!!!! MOLECULES  Still not life… ATOMS  Not life…

BIOTIC or ABIOTIC???

End of Notes…
