Set High Expectations for Yourself and Develop a Plan for Achieving Them Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity Oprah Winfrey

Strategic planning is the process organizations use to decide who they are, where they are going, and how they will get there. Strategic planning is just as important to you on a personal level as it is to any organization that might employ you.

Why High Expectations and a Good Plan Are So Important Success a progressive realization of goals What is meant by the saying “success is a do-it-yourself project”?  People do take responsibility for doing what is necessary to succeed.  Successful people are proactive, assertive, and self-directed  Successful people know that their success rests with them and only them

Establish High Expectations for Yourself To out perform the competition you have to set the bar high.

Plan for Success  Have a career vision  Create guiding principles  List your career-related strengths and weaknesses  Create goals and strategies

Career Vision – Your Dream  What is the picture I would like to see when I retire?  If I could choose to be anything or have any position in my profession, what would it be?  If I were asked to write a one-sentence biographical introduction of myself that summarizes my career, what should it say?

Guiding Principals Tough decisions will come as you advance in your career How you will answer questions for tough decisions that you will make in your career will depend on what you value most in life and what your priorities are at the time.

Guiding Principals (continued)  Honesty and integrity – be honest, forthright, and ethical  Balanced commitment – maintain an appropriate balance between career advancement and personal interests  Health – pursue advancement vigorously, but not to the detriment of my health  Common sense- apply it when making decisions  Credibility – master knowledge and skills of my profession  Perseverance – fulfill my responsibilities regardless of obstacles  Role Model – be consistently positive  Mistakes – learn from mistakes

Identify Your Personal Strengths and Weaknesses Class Activity: Take the next 10 minutes to write down 3 of your greatest strengths and 3 of your greatest weaknesses as you see yourself today Discussion 15 minutes

Developing Goals and Strategies Goals translate your career into measurable terms 1. Broadly stated 2. Specific enough to be measured 3. Focused on a single issue 4. Tied directly to your career vision 5. Accord well with your guiding principles 6. Show what you want to accomplish

Developing Goals and Strategies (continued) Goals are ends unto themselves while strategies are means to an end  Sample: Improve my leadership skills 1. Should volunteer to be a group leader in college classes that require group projects 2. Should run for a student government office in my college

Finally  Once you have a career vision, a set of guiding principles, goals, and corresponding strategies, you have a comprehensive strategic plan for developing your career.
