Step By Step Through the New Testament (Part II) Rev. Christopher J. Respass Antioch Bible Institute Spring 2014 Lesson 8: Romans: Overview (Part 1)

Romans: Overview Theme of Romans: righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ. A.Salvation: Deliverance from the past penalty (justification), present power (sanctification) and future presence (glorification) of sin. B.Righteousness: conformity to an unchanging standard (unattainable by human effort alone).

Romans: Overview C.Faith: a response of the whole person to God’s revelation in Christ. Included the understanding of intellect, depth of emotions and commitment of the will.

Romans: Overview I.All Have Sinned A. Romans 1: People suppress God’s revealed truth by their wickedness/unrighteousness (v.18). 2. God has revealed much about himself in the act and product of his Creation (v.19-20). 3. Mankind chose to worship the creature (i.e., the created thing) rather that the Creator. (v ).

Romans: Overview B. Jews are also guilty (Rom 2:1-3:8) 1) All who sin with or without the law will perish (Rom. 2:12-25) 2) Both Jews and Gentiles suffer the same fate. C. All stand guilty (Rom 3:9-20) 1) No one is righteous (Rom 3:9-20) 2) All means ALL!! (Rom 3:22b-23)

Romans: Overview II.God’s Redemption in Christ (Rom 3:21-31) A. Romans 3:20 “ For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” B. Atonement: Christ’s sacrifice as met the demands of a holy God to punish sin and turned aside God’s wrath against us propitiation)(Rom 3:23-25).

Romans: Overview C. Redemption: Christ has paid the price to purchase freedom from the penalty and practice of sin for those who believe in him (Rom. 3:24). D. Justification: In Christ, each believer is declared righteous by God when that believer puts faith and trust in Jesus Christ.

Romans: Overview E. God’s Salvation is Just (Rom 3:21-31). 1. It is obtained apart from the law (v.21) 2. It is available to all through faith in Jesus Christ (v.22). F. Abraham (and all OT saints) are justified by Faith (Rom 4:1-25) “For what does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.“ (Rom 4:3)

Romans: Overview III.God’s Life-Changing Power (Rom 6-8) A. Dead to Sin, Alive to God (Rom 6:1-11) 1. Baptism (Rom 6:1-4) 2. Dead to the old life of sin and alive to the new life in Jesus Christ (Rom 6:5- 11).

Romans: Overview B. Live Righteously (Rom 6:12-14) 1. Sin should not reign in our bodies (v.12). 2. Do not submit to activities of sin, but to God in righteousness (v.13). 3. Do not allow sin to dominate you (v.14).

Romans: Overview How will we achieve this way of life? How will be victorious over sin in our lives? Through the Holy Spirit!!!

Romans: Overview C. The Holy Spirit indwells each Believer 1. The victory that we have in Christ comes through the Holy Spirit who indwells and gives us power to overcome sin. 2. The most notable blessing of the Holy Spirit is not in gifts of the spirit, but in his effectual working that brings about the righteousness of God in our lives.
