CINCO DE MAYO DONALD VANDERHALL

COUNTRY MAP AND FLAP

WHAT IS CINCO DE MAYO Cinco de Mayo is a day to celebrate culture, achievements and the experiences people and the Mexican background. The Mexicans-Americans who achieved fame and fortune influenced the United States to celebrate this Mexican holiday. Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco, San Antonio, Sacramento, Phoenix, Denver, and El Paso have the largest Cinco De Mayo celebrations in the USA’s south-western regions.

HISTORY OF THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA In 1861, Benito Juarez became president and was forced to default on his debts to European governments. France, Britain, and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursements. General Charles Latrille de Lorencez set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles. The battle lasted from daybreak to early-evening. The French then retreated and less than 100 Mexicans had been killed.

THE MEXICAN VICTORY The victory was a huge boost to the Mexican Army. The description of Time magazine was “ the Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath”.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA The Battle of Puebla was important for two reasons. One, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army and second no country in America had been invaded by any other European military forces.

THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA

CONSEQUENCES THAT THE US FACED Historians have argued that the main goal was to break up the American Union. When the Mexicans defeated Napoleon III, it allowed the US to build a powerful army. President Lincoln and the Secretary of the state neutralized the Mexican situation. “The Emperor of France ordered his generals to spend a few months taking over Mexico and then helped the confederates win their war against the Us.” If that had happened, the US would never become significant.

TODAY’S CELEBRATION Cinco de Mayo is not only celebrated in Mexico, but all around the world. The celebration of Cinco de Mayo has become popular across the US-Mexican Border and parts of the US. People celebrate with cultures of food, music, and beverages. Cities throughout the Us hold parades and concerts for this holiday.
