Drill

Objective I will determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words. I will use consult references to determine or clarify precise word meanings, part of speech, and etymology.

Syllabus and Signature Sheet Signature sheet due – check the homework board Don’t forget about the TYPED, FINAL DRAFT of your “Where I’m From” poem. Turn in rubric also.

Book Sign Out Keep these books at home all year. You are responsible for replacing this book if it is lost.

Vocabulary Sign-up Each student will be responsible for 10 words in a vocabulary unit. Students will create a ppt. with 10 slides that include the word, part of speech, definition, picture, and sentence. You may not be presenting until later in the year, but you may begin working on this at any time. I will announce the due date for your unit at least one week in advance. You may use music, sound effects, transitions, etc in your slides. An example follows (will be uploaded on my website).

Pliable (adj) Easily bent, flexible; easily influenced I kneaded the dough until it was soft and pliable, and then I ran it through the pasta machine.

Reiterate (v) To say again, repeat The teacher reiterated the instructions before allowing the students to begin the assignment.

Stolid (adj) Not easily moved mentally or emotionally; dull, unresponsive. The man’s stolid expression makes it hard to tell what he is thinking.

Tentative (adj) Experimental in nature; uncertain I have tentative plans that I will apply to Syracuse University.

Unkempt (adj) Not combed; untidy; not properly maintained; unpolished, rude Waking up late caused her to look unkempt at school that day.

Verbatim (adj, adv) Word for word; exactly as written or spoken Copying text verbatim without using proper citations is considered plagiarism.

Warily (adv) Cautiously, with great care Balancing the gigantic cake, I made my way warily toward the table.

Summary/Closure One way to augment word choice scores in writing is to infuse sophisticated vocabulary in written work. Vocabulary study should NOT only consist of studying words for vocabulary quizzes but using these words to make sentences more descriptive.
