WHAT IS TRAFFICKING IN PEOPLE? “The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.” United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. April 2006.

WHAT IS TRAFFICKING IN PEOPLE? Put more simply Human Trafficking is: The illegal movement of people, within national or across international borders, for the purposes of exploitation in the form of commercial sex, domestic service or manual labour. Human Trafficking is modern-day SLAVERY.

WHERE AND WHO? Over 2,000,000 people are trafficked every year over international borders Victims are men, women and children, but around 50% are children.

WHERE AND WHO? In Thailand: 60,000 children sold into prostitution. In the former Soviet Union: an estimated 10,000 women forced into prostitution in Israel. In North America: Asian women are sold to brothels for $16,000 each. In the UK: trafficked women are forced to see around 30 – 40 clients per day.

Globally the Salvation Army is very involved in helping to stop this trade We are currently responding with programmes specifically designed to combating trafficking in places such as the Philippines, Sri Lanka, China, Asia Pacific, South Africa, Malawi, Zambia, Eastern Europe, USA & the UK.
