Welcome and thanks for coming tonight! Ms. Julia Henning FINANCIAL LITERACY

WHAT IS FINANCIAL LITERACY? In this course, your student will learn many factors involved in making wise decisions to become financially responsible: Learn personal skills to be prepared for the job market Navigate the road to financial aid for college Maintain a checking and savings account Understand their taxes and protect assets Create a budget and maximize their purchasing power Understand and preserve their credit …And much, much more!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME: Genuine excitement for the subject I am teaching Care for and belief in your child Desire to see your child succeed into the future Fairness in assessments and grading Advocate for your child and teach them to self-advocate Understanding of your student’s workload - If they keep up in class they will have minimal homework

WHAT DO I EXPECT FROM STUDENTS? Keep organized notebooks – they will be graded on their notebooks Consistent effort, preparedness, reliability, work completion Respectful attitude in class - I will treat them like young adults and expect the same in return An open mind and active participation in discussions and activities Ability to save and keep track of their work: A FLASHDRIVE is very helpful. Their notebook will be a portfolio to refer back to later I KNOW they will learn a lot that they can use now and later in life. I am excited about what they are learning already!

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? Support your child’s educational progress Believe in your child’s success Check Infinite Campus periodically Ask them what they are learning!

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED SO FAR? How the job market and economy are related Things to consider when selecting a career - we looked at job outlooks for some of their specific choices Begin working on building job skills now that will help them now and later Practicing good listening skills – challenge them to try it out on you! Costs of Higher Education vs. Rewards – an investment in their future How to navigate the financial aid process for college or trade schools Job application and interviewing skills Resume writing Much more to follow! *Check out our textbook!
