Okina ‘Okina’ is most important play of cerebration in Noh. It is important, because it developed from ‘Okina Sarugaku’ – it was the Origin of todays Noh. And it was a very important ritual dance performance at the shrines and the temples. Sarugaku-actors undertook to perform the ritual dance to purify the place by exorcizing the evil-spirits and to pray for the protection of the land, prosperity and a huge harvest. The Walkway(Hashigakari) linked dressing room and Stage, it also has the idea of linking intangible world with real world. All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

Social environment at the time of ZEAMI Many competitors At the time of Zeami there were several important groups performing Sarugaku(Noh) at Shrines and temples in Yamato(around Nara) and Oumi(around Osaka). Zeami belonged to one of Yamato-sarugaku groups. “urashimamyoujinengiemaki”‐Muromachi era, owned by Urashima shrine Source of photo : “ZEAMI” Heibonsha From “nenju-gyouji emaki” dengakunou Source of photo : Digital culture library index.html All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

Besides Sarugaku there were some other performance arts, and they competed hard with each other for winning favors of Shogun, aristocrat and public. “Sarugaku at Kasuga-kouhukuji ” owned by Kasuga shrine Source of photo : “ZEAMI” Heibonsha Ennenn ”turedsure jounin gyoujou ezu” owned by Chinen- in Source of photo : Digital culture library /genryu/index.html All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

ZEAMI (a.c.1363 ~ 1444) What he did. His father, Kannami was the first innovator in Sarugaku, he was the most favored Sarugaku actor in Yamato-sarugaku at his time, and he founded his own Sarugaku school called Kanze. Zeami innovated Yamato- Sarugaku together with his father and had perfected it as it is performed today as ‘Noh’. Zeami expressed his ideas about art and stage performances in many literary volumes named ‘Kadensho’―’The Book of Transmission of the Flower’. The word ‘Flower’ mentioned here means various elements to attract audience. Zeami used it sometimes quality of actor to attract audience, and sometimes sophisticated and hidden know how to make the performances successful. All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

What was the innovation of ZEAMI in Sarugaku? All Copyright©2014.IFSJ From the Beast(Oni) to the celestial Beauty(Tennyo) The performance of Yamato- sarugaku which Zeami belonged to was more acrobatic and bold than others. Performing ‘Oni’ (beast-like being) was characteristic of Yamato sarugaku. But the audience favored elegance and grace more than exciting acrobats and bold performances, so, Kannami and Zeami adopted elegant dances from other performance arts into Yamato sarugaku. And not only integrated them with their original performances, they refined their grace in order to reach ‘Yugen’. Source of photo :narano.exblog.jp Source of photo: Awaya Akio’s blog

Pursue one’s role in the society Transmit the whys and wherefores of tradition Using core competencies of Zeami Decide and pursue one’s vision and mission ⇒ preparation to break through Systematization and transmission of own management philosophy ⇒ For sustainable management through generations All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

Change and Immutability Be aware of your own timing and get a chance It is important to know the cycle of the timing and prepare well to get a chance and to overcome a difficult moment philosophy and attitude ⇒ Immutable Way of the performance and it’s form ⇒ should be chang ed depends on the times and audience. to have both ⇒ also significant factors for sustainable management All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

The Words of ZEAMI are still alive in our society If it is hidden, it is The Flower ‘ Hisureba Hana’ Have a special skill, which is known exclusively by yourself, and it must be kept secret until a critical moment. Remember your original intention ‘shoshin wasuru bekarazu’ Original intention ⇒ a strategy to deal with a new challenge. Store the learning from your experiences and your earnestness when you encountered new difficulties and how you overcame those situations. The Strategy to survive All Copyright©2014.IFSJ

The Words of ZEAMI are still alive in our society You should be aware that not fixating on one moment, that is the Key of the Flower Zeami mentioned that the constant change without any stagnation is the core of the art. Powerful moment, powerless moment ‘Odoki, Medoki’ No matter how capable you are, how much you trained your self, there are Odoki(powerful moment) and Medoki(powerless moment) in your life, and they circulate by cycle of certain period, that is the one of principles.
