WHY DO WE PUT NUTRITIONAL LABELS ON FOOD PRODUCTS IN OUR COUNTRY  It helps you make informed choices.  Help you follow Canada’s Food Guide to healthy eating   Is required on most packaged foods  Is based on Health Canada’s regulations 

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK AT ON THE LABEL ? M-jF5zCQ2yQ  What are the most important things to look at on the label?  Serving size/ how many servings in a container  Ingredients

5 EASY STEPS TO READING A FOOD LABEL  1) what is the serving size ?  2) how many calories ? This is how much energy you get from the serving.  3)Look at the % DV – percent of daily value. It tells you if there is a little or a lot of that nutrient in the serving. A higher number means more. 40% is high, 5% is low  4) Get less of these  Fat, saturated fat cholesterol  Sodium ( salt)  5) get more of these carbs,fibre,vitiminA and c, calcium, protein, iron.

WORDS TO WATCH FOR AKA ALSO KNOWN AS …. nutrientAKA …on the label  4) Sugars  4) fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose  Honey  Liquid sugar invert sugar syrup, galatose, dextrose, dextrin, corn syrup solids, molasses, raisin syrup.  Watch for words ending in “ose”  For sugar alcohols watch for words ending in “ol” like sorbitol
