Wellness Wheel

Physical Wellness Physical Wellness: a perception and expectation of physical health. Exercising regularly Eating nutritiously and consciously Getting enough sleep and physical rest Getting regular physical check-ups Avoiding/limiting the use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco

Spiritual Wellness Spiritual Wellness: a positive perception of meaning and purpose in life. Being open to different cultures and religions Giving your time to volunteer, participate in community service activities, and/or care for the environment Spending time defining personal values and ethics and making decisions that complement them Spending time alone in personal reflection and/or in spiritual activities Caring about the welfare of others and acting out of that care

Social Wellness Social Wellness: a perception of having support available from family, friends, or co-workers in times of need and a perception of being a valued support provider. Being comfortable with and liking yourself as a person Contributing time and energy to the community Communicating your feelings Developing friendships Recognizing a need for “fun” time in your life Budgeting and balancing your time to include both responsibilities and relaxation

Emotional Wellness Emotional Wellness: possession of a secure self-identity and a positive sense of self-regard; also the ability to cope with and/or improve unpleasant mood states. Keeping a positive attitude (in your own way) Being sensitive to your feelings and the feelings of others Learning ways to effectively cope with stress Being realistic about your expectations and time Taking responsibility for your own behavior Viewing challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles Functioning independently but knowing when you need to ask for help

Intellectual Wellness Intellectual Wellness: the perception of being internally energized by an optimal amount of intellectually stimulating activity. Learning because you want to – not because you are told to. Doing the work assigned. Learning through varied experiences – reading, writing, sharing and exploration Listening & observing what is around you Finding applications for material learned in the classroom Staying current with world affairs/news Questioning and thinking critically Exposing yourself to new experiences (e.g. arts, theater)

Environmental Wellness Environmental Wellness: the positive perception of the environment that one works and lives in. Being aware of your physical environment – both the spaces you occupy and the people and energies with which you surround yourself Being aware of the natural environment you live in Recognizing opportunities that lead you to new skills and acting on those opportunities to ensure the stability and longevity of our natural resources

Financial Wellness Financial Wellness: Developing the skills you need to manage your finances responsibly.  Learning to differentiate between necessities and luxuries Living within your means Educating yourself on financial literacy and making choices with the full information Planning for future financial success; making responsible choices now to support your future plans Accessing the resources and skills that allow you to accomplish your goals

Wellness Outlook You might not be able to fit all desired actions or areas of wellness in to one day! So, determine what your timeframe is. . .every day, every few days, each week, each month? That being said. . . .don’t postpone wellness, health, and happiness!

Tips for Optimum Wellness & Avoiding Burnout Take time to plan and assess It’s ok to say “no” Capitalize on “two birds one stone”-activities when appropriate Be proactive to reduce stress Recognize the “warning signs” of stress, acknowledge them, and take a moment Take deep breathes when you need them and don’t be afraid to use a power pose Do not underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and drinking water!
