The Verdict The call for More and Better Aid Drop the Debt Trade Justice Through building a movement for change

More Aid The G8 signalled an extra $48 billion in aid per year by The EU promised to double aid spending over 5 years, to 0.51 per cent by But much more is needed…

Better Aid UK to stop attaching damaging policy conditions to aid. Donors have agreed to be monitored to ensure aid is coordinated and goes where it is needed. But poor countries still don’t have the right to choose their own economic policies in practice, and many donors are still ‘tying aid’.

Drop the Debt Principle of “100% multilateral debt cancellation” accepted. The G8 promised 18 countries debt cancellation worth about $1 billion per year. Another 20 potentially in the pipeline.

But promises must be fulfilled. Over 60 countries need 100% debt cancellation to meet poverty targets. Damaging economic policy conditions still being attached. Drop the Debt

Trade Justice Commission for Africa Report: “we do not believe that poor countries should be forced to liberalise”. UK General Election: UK government “will not force trade liberalisation on developing countries either through trade negotiations or aid conditionality”.

Trade Justice But at the WTO, rich countries decided not to end the agricultural subsidies that cause dumping. In WTO negotiations on services and industrial goods, things actually got worse. UK government has not properly regulated multinational corporations for their impact overseas. Very little real progress was made on trade this year: we need action, not words.

Other Outcomes of 2005 Commitment to universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment for all those who need it by 2010 by the G8. International poverty is an election issue.

Policy Progress Small steps along a long road. Our campaigning has made a difference. The challenge is to keep going and make sure promises are kept. We need to be that “great generation”.

The Year of the White Band Building a movement. Challenging the acceptance of poverty. The next step for some, a new awakening for many.

Moments Along the Way… The Indian Ocean tsunami reminds us that it is the poor who suffer most.

Challenge from Mandela “Sometimes it falls upon a generation to be great. You can be that great generation.”
