Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Grigori SHIRKOV Joint Institute for Nuclear Research Dubna, Russia International Intergovernmental Organization 18 member states;4 associate members

Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) is an international intergovernmental organization located in Dubna, Russian Federation, about 100 km north of Moscow Photo of Dubna from satellite

Structure JINR participation in ILC Accelerator physics & techniques Detectors Particle Physics Detector concepts R&D Experiments &Tests Program for new physics & experiments R&D Test facilities Infrastructure Sitting Safety Scientific Council of JINR ( ): encourages JINR to be involved in the ILC design effort and to invest appropriate resources in scientific and technological developments to support its ability to play a leading role in the ILC project; supports the intention of JINR to participate actively in the ILC project and the possible interest of JINR to host the ILC JINR Committee of Plenipotentiaries approved this recommendation on The Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives of the Governments of the Member States is the supreme body governing the Institute.Committee of Plenipotentiary Representatives The total investment into the ILC activity at JINR is about 100 k$ for 2006

Accelerator physics & technique Design, construction, commissioning of the Test bench of Electron gun with photocathode (Photo Injector prototype) & experiments (Inhere: creation of FEL in the range of wavelength of 1000 Ǻ – so called Soft X-Ray Laser – a lot of applications) Participation in design works on construction, manufacturing and assembling of the cryo modules for superconducting RF cavities Assembling and test of RF accelerator sections and cryo modules Test of the accelerator sections with electron beam Final stage of these R&D – creation of the linear electron accelerator with superconducting RF cavity

Development of the magnetic systems for ILC: - modeling of the magnetic field, magnet parameters, technical proposals for design, construction, tests - R&D of magnetic systems based both on superconducting and “warm” electromagnets - particle dynamics simulation in ILC Development of the diagnostic systems for measurements of the beam parameters Experimental and theoretical works on interaction of short electron bunch with RF system (based on CLIC technology) Analyze of the methods for diagnostics of electron bunches Other possible Accelerator “participation” :

LHE ground Machinery Hall # 2: Possible place for location of the Test Bench for experiments on superconducting RF cavities. Adv: Large hall, Power supply, Water supply, very close to systems for liquid Helium and other cryogenics

LNP ground Building 118 Location of constructed LINAC-800. Test of RF accelerator sections and cryo modules LINAC with super- conducting RF cavity (power,water,... LINAC-800 – first electron beam on

LNP ground Building 108 (LEPTA project) 2 experimental Halls (water, power, …) Test Bench for Photo Injector

Engineering & Infrastructure. Why to site ILC near Dubna ? JINR as a basic scientific and organizational structure A world’s unique Space Communication Centre (In 2005 the State Enterprise “Kosmicheskaya Svyaz” and JINR launched a Dubna- Moscow communication channel of capacity 2.5 Gbps. A 1 Gbps segment is now being formed within this channel to ensure effective participation of JINR in international and national projects) Good motor roads, railways, and waterways (the Volga river); A technopark under construction; A good position in the European region; A positive reaction received in preliminary discussions with the interested organizations in Russia.

Engineering & Infrastructure. There are no large populated areas on the route. Possible “line” crosses only the railway to Savelovo (of low utilization) and the River Hotcha with a very small flow rate. The route is quite uniform in elevation level. Some areas are subject to surface swamping. The bedrock is stable. The depth of the tunnel could be about 20 m. There is a dry homogeneous moraine between 10m and 30m depths along all the possible accelerator line. This was confirmed by the geological prospecting carried out to choose a site for construction of the U-70 accelerator. Parallel to the route runs a high-voltage (550kV) power transmission line from the Konakovo GRES (electric power plant). A special group for civil engineering was created. They started their activity and contacts with Moscow geodetic and geological Institutes, State Project Institute, Moscow Metro Railway (great experience and challenging task), … Advs of the possible siting location 0 km 10 km 20 km 30 km 40 km Volga river Dubna 550 kV power line
