Do you want to form your own band to take part in the music festival?

Form your own band in groups of six. Decide who will play what instrument and who will sing. Decide the name of your band and what kind of band you will be. For example, will you be a rock band, or a small group of singers? Then, choose an English song for your “band” to perform.

You may find this song on the internet or on some of your own tapes or CDs. Practise singing your song to the music and then perform to the class. This may be just the beginning for you and your band!

LIU MEI: Right. Now let’s decide who should do what in our band. Who would like to do lead vocals? That’s our main singer. Sample dialogue

WANG LI: Why not you? You have a lovely singing voice. I’ve head you sing before. But you’ll have to play lead guitar too. You can do it! LIU MEI: Well, all right. Can you help me out on guitar and vocals?

WANG LI: Sure, I can. What do the rest of you think? OTHER: Yes, we agree. LIU MEI: So how about you, Ma Xin? Do you think you can try bass guitar? MA XIN: I’m not sure. What does that mean?

LI QIN: It means you keep the beat, or rhythm, for them on a guitar. MA XIN: OK. I can give it a try. WU JUN: What about me? What can I do? LIU MEI: Every band needs someone to play the drums.

WU JUN: Great! I like to hit things to make noise! LI QIN: OK. What will we call ourselves? WANG LI : How about The Chopsticks. We work together. MA XIN: Nope, I don’t like it. How about We Er Hu? Get it?

WU JUN: That’s silly. Why not name the band The Silk Shirts? MA XIN: Yeah, we all like silk clothes! OTHERS: Sure, so The Silk Shirt it is. LIU MEI: Fine. Now let’s decide what song we’ll play.

S 1 : Some comfortable clothes would be best. S 2 : Fine. I’ll talk to him and call you again very soon. Where would it be best to meet? S 1 : At the studio if that is OK with you. Thank you very much. S 2 : My pleasure.

S 1 : I’m looking forward to the concert on Friday but I’m a bit worried about the arrangements. S 2 : Yes, I know what you mean. It’s not clear whether we should have dinner before or after the concert. I suppose that depends on how we are going to get the concert hall. Sample dialogue

S 1 : Well, what if we travel by taxi? We can get there earlier and go to the restaurant next door. I can ask them to keep us a table. But if you want to go by bus, it’ll take much longer and we’ll not have time to eat first. So what do you think? S 2 : I think I’d prefer to eat first. What about you?

S 1 : That’s fine with me. So let’s take a taxi together. How about meeting at the school gates and go from there. OK? S 2 : That’s fine with me. I could be there at 6:30 and wait till you come.

S 1 : Good. Now all we have to do is decide how much we want to pay for the tickets. There are some at 30 BMB up to 500 RMB. But I don’t think it’s worth paying a lot as you can hear beautifully wherever you sit. So I think we should get the cheapest seats.

S 2 : Right. If we buy the cheapest seats then and we’ll have more money for a splendid dinner. S 1 : Sounds great to me! Let’s do that.

B: It’s too simple. The words to the songs are so-so. A: So who do you prefer? B: I like Mariah Carey best because she has so much feeling when she sings. The lyrics to her songs are also great.
