 Dates back to the Apollo program.  Purpose is to promote a sense of camaraderie between astronauts and support personnel.  NASA does not dictate its content or allow outside interests to influence the process.  Songs often chosen by family members.  Sometimes music is appropriate for the day’s mission.

Usually just play 2 minutes of music followed by a groggy reply of “Good Morning Houston.” Considered bad form to wake astronauts with Rob Zombie or Eminem. It should energize the team and get them ready for the day. Wake up music is only played on the shuttle, personal CD players and alarm clocks are used on the ISS.

GEMINI 6 December 15-16, 1965 New lyrics to “Hello Dolly” sung by Jack Jones sent to crew GEMINI 12 November 11-15, /14/66 “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music” sent to the crew. APOLLO 10 May 18-26, /25/69 “Come Fly With Me” wakeup from crew to Mission Control SKYLAB 2/8/74 “Goin’Back to Houston” by Dean Martin APOLLO-SOYUZ TEST PROJECT (ASTP) July 15-24, /16/75 “Good Morning Sunshine” Chicago - (Apollo crew) 7/18/75 “Midnight in Moscow” - (Apollo crew)

7/21/2009 “Life Is a Highway,” performed by Rascal Flatts. The tune was played for Tom Marshburn, who completed his first spacewalk Monday. 7/19/2009 “Learning to Fly,” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, for former Navy SEAL Chris Cassidy, who is making his first space flight aboard the space shuttle Endeavour. 7/30/2009 “I Got You Babe,” performed by Sonny and Cher. The song was a special request for Koichi Wakata, the first Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut to serve as a long-duration resident of the station.

8/31/2009 “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan was played for Mission Specialist Jose Hernandez. 9/8/2009 “Beautiful Day” by U2 was played for Mission Specialist Tim Kopra, the Shuttle’s newest crew member. 9/10/2009 “Good Day Sunshine” by the Beatles was played for Pilot Kevin Ford.

 “Walk the Line” Johnny Cast for EVA  Alma Mater fight songs  Rocky Theme  Star Wars and Star Trek themes  Anything Beach Boys  “What a Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong  Anything home-made from Mission Control

STS-26 September 29-October 3, /30/88 Robin Williams opened with “Gooooooood Morning Discovery!!!” in “Good Morning Vietnam” style. The original recording produced by Houston area DJ from KKBQ, Mike Cahill, also included original lyrics recorded to the theme music of the TV show “Green Acres”. Robin Williams was approached by Cahill about doing the tape. NASA knew nothing of the tape until it was offered as a gift by Cahill. 3/17/89 Discovery crew woke up Mission Control with “Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It’s Off To Work We Go” from movie “Snow White.”

STS-34 10/22/89 “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Words “Galileo, Galileo” referring to primary payload “Galileo” were substituted for original word “Mama Mia, Mama Mia.” 1/13/90 “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” referring to the student (SEEDS) experiment, sending 12.5 million tomato seeds into orbit aboard LDEF.

It was "Good Day Sunshine" for the international space station crew Sunday morning. NASA astronaut Bill McArthur and Russian cosmonaut Valery Tokarev were treated to a live wake-up call of the Beatles classic in a first-ever concert linkup to the space station.
