How the Seminar is Conducted Seminar time is limited and goes by quickly Please review Our Seminar Protocol (in Doc Sharing) and Netiquette Please adhere to the following guidelines to be sure that we can cover everything for the week!

How the Seminar is Conducted… First, when you respond to a comment someone made, try to preface it with their first name. For example, if their screen name is Mary Smith, say: Mary - What you say is correct. My perspective is ____”

How the Seminar is Conducted… Second, when you want to ask a question, please use the // symbol and I will call on you. I don’t want to miss any questions!

How the Seminar is Conducted… Third, please refrain from off-topic and sidebar conversation

How the Seminar is Conducted… Fourth, when I ask the entire class a question... No need to raise your hand Everyone should try to respond Student responses should never be one or two words. Most responses like this do not help others to understand what you are saying. Get into the habit of adding value to each and every response you make. Great discussion is what makes our seminars successful!

Special Seminar Guidelines Please do not announce that you are late or that you are leaving the seminar early Why? It tends to take the class off-track because people feel rude if they do not acknowledge you Think about this If you were late in a ground class, would you stop the class to announce when you arrived?

Make a point to attend Seminar Expands on the readings Adds to your understanding of the weekly material A time when we can interact with each other Tips for the discussions and assignments! Although not mandatory, it is part of the coursework Form good habits for your academic career!

Kaplan Classes Classes are 10 weeks in length The last week does not have a seminar, but there is a final assignment! Each week comprises 1 unit Week 1 = Unit 1; Week 2 = Unit 2; etc. Units begin every Wednesday and end on the following Tuesday

Calendar of Units Course begins: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Unit One begins: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 Your first seminar: Sunday, April 24, 2011 Unit One ends: Tuesday, April 26, 2011(midnight) – this includes Discussion 1 Unit One assignment due April 26, 2011 & no longer accepted after May 10 (late penalty up to one week – 20% or 12 points; two weeks – 30% or 18 points) Unit Two begins: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Your second seminar: Sunday, May 1, 2011 Unit Two ends: Tuesday, May 3, 2011 Unit Two assignment due May 3, 2011 & no longer accepted after May 17, 2011 Follow this same pattern throughout the course. Remember assignments that are more than 2 weeks late are not accepted except in extreme circumstances.

Homework Expectations Assignments are due by midnight on Tuesday Do not wait until the last minute to submit Plan ahead! You never know what will prevent you from meeting the deadline

When Will I Get My Grades??? Discussion grades will be posted each week no later than Sunday midnight of the week following the Unit’s completion Assignments (course projects) will be graded no later than Sunday of the week following the Unit’s completion

Discussion Expectations Respond to at least two classmates (or my posts) commenting on their response to the discussion question. Responses should be in the 30-40 word range or at least 3-5 sentences. You must post to the discussion board on at least three (3) separate days during the unit To do this, make three or more postings during the week by posting your original post and then replying to 2 or more classmates on separate days showing meaningful* interaction * Responses must build on the ideas of others and relate to the unit material

Discussion Expectations Discussion is worth 50 points each week and 45% of your overall grade! Requirements for Discussion Questions are in each Unit Plan to make your first response by Saturday of each week – earlier if possible Initial response must be no less than 100 words or roughly 7 to 10 sentences

Discussion Expectations Thoughtful note Just because we set a minimum does not mean this is what you should do. That is for people who are only doing this because it is an assignment, rather than understanding the value of this activity. - - - "No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction." Charles Kendall Adams

Discussion Expectations Check Did you answer the question? Did you answer all parts of the question? It is not uncommon for students to get a little off-track and forget to answer the question asked. Make sure this does not happen to you as it can affect your grade. Suggestion Type it in Microsoft Word - This gives you time to think it through and to correct errors in spelling and/or grammar, which also can affect your grade….and count your words! Copy and paste the text; do not attach a document.

Discussion Grading Rubric 15 points All questions answered 7.5 On topic and professional 7.5 Demonstrates analysis 10 Response to 1 classmate 10 Response to 2 classmates _________ _____________________ 50 Total before deductions Possible deductions: -5 Not 100 words -5 Main post not by Saturday -3 Responses on only 2 days -6 Responses on only 1 day -2 Spelling errors -2 Grammatical errors -2 Punctuation errors
