What is School Bullying?  Bullying is an intentional act in which a child wants to harm the victim  Bullying involves repeated occurrences – generally not a random act or single incident  Bullying is not the same as “playing around,” it is about the abuse of power  It is not a phase children have to go through, it is not "just messing around“  Bullying can take many forms: verbal, social, physical & cyberbullying  A school is responsible for addressing harassment incidents about which it knows or reasonably should have known

What to know about Cyberbullying Research on cyberbullying has found that students involved are more likely to:  Be unwilling to attend school  Receive poor grades  Have lower self-esteem  Have more health problems  Use alcohol and drugs  Skip school Cyberbullying is defined as threats or other offensive behavior sent online to a victim or posted online about the victim for others to see such as:  Instant messaging  Social Networking Sites   Chat rooms

Social Networking and the Effects of Cyberbullying

Facebook Use & Teen Depression In a recent article, researchers are linking excessive use of Facebook and how it is contributing to teen depression “With in-your-face friends’ tallies, status updates and photos of happy-looking people having great times, Facebook pages can make some kids feel even worse if they thing they don’t measure up” For the full article, please click on the link below Facebook&Depression.pdf

Bullying Prevention: How School Counselors Can Help Assess for unsafe online behavior such as a student sharing personal information, like passwords to social networking site and other risk factors such as signs of depression Provide education about online relationships by addressing the benefits and dangers of using the Internet; appropriate and inappropriate sending of personal information over the internet Promote development of coping skills: problem-solving, decision-making & communication skills Always report online victimizations via: Cyber Tipline: (800) &/or Internet Crimes Against Children: (Burrow, Sanchez, et al., Journal of Counseling Psychology, vol 89)

Bullying Prevention: Cyber Safety PSA

Bullying Prevention Sites  Cyberthreats are online material that threatens or raises concerns about violence against others, suicide, or other self-harm. There are 2 kinds:  Direct threats: actual threats to hurt someone  Putting distressing material online about someone

School Transitioning In the transition from elementary school to middle school and middle school to HS students experience: New teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff Changes in classroom expectations and instructional techniques New peers, new peer pressures, and more dependence on peers for self-concept Increased pressure to earn grades More choices in course selection, school related activities More need for balancing of school activities as time demands increase Increased need for time management skills

Body Image Negative body image is…  A distorted perception of your shape  You feel ashamed, self-conscious and anxious about your body Positive body image is…  You appreciate your natural body shape & are accepting of your body  You feel comfortable and confident

Helpful Sites for Counselors/Educators  Professional Development is helpful in increasing student achievement and engaging teachers  Discovery Education offers free student resources The three main risks are: Inappropriate Contact –Teach kids how to recognize and protect themselves against contact with cyber-bullies, hackers, phishers, and predators.. Inappropriate Content – Help kids understand that the Internet is forever: everything they post online is tracked and stored and will follow them to future job interviews and college entrance interviews. Inappropriate Conduct – Teach kids that the Internet is a public forum: anonymity is a myth. Help them be the good person online that they are when they’re offline.

Helpful Sites for Parents  This site is a great resource for parents and students to utilize when preparing for college admissions tests  The National Parent Teacher Association provides tools and resources to help parents keep their children safe, healthy and successful- in school and in life
