The Importance of Nutrition Why you need nutritious foods. Foods you eat are more likely to help you look your best and perform at your peak. Calories-Units of heat that measure the energy used by the body and the energy that foods supply to the body. We need Calories to function daily.

The Importance of Nutrition Nutrients- Substances in food that your body needs. Nutrients have many roles. Those roles include:  Giving you energy  Building new tissues and repairing cells  Helping your body's processes and systems run smoothly.

The Importance of Nutrition Different foods contain different amounts of nutrients. Our body requires a lot of different nutrients to function. Nutrition- the process of using food and its substances to help your body have energy, grow, develop, and work properly.

What Influences Your Food Choices? Appetite- Psychological desire for food. Appetite is often engaged by our senses.  Smell  Sight  Texture

What Influences Your Food Choices? Hunger- The physical need for food. How are appetite and hunger different? Your brain sends a signal to find food. Stomach growl, tired, or even feel light- headed.

Food and Emotions What is an emotional eater? We attach certain foods to events. Comfort foods. What are they? Is emotional eating healthy? People who eat to relieve stress and boredom need to find better coping skills.

Getting the Nutrients You Need We all need the same nutrients to be healthy. Age, gender, state of health, and level of activity determine how many nutrients we need. Nutrient Deficiency- A shortage of a nutrient.

Getting the Nutrients You Need As you begin your teen years you will need more Calcium than normal. Calcium will help build strong bones and teeth. What happens if you have a calcium deficiency?  Weak teeth  Osteoporosis- a disease that causes bones to become brittle and break.
