Sheffield City Region ESF – Big Lottery OPT IN Sheffield City Region Eleanor Dearle

What are the Issues? Widespread multi-faceted deprivation and labour market inactivity – 100,000 (13%) economically inactive residents of working age in 2014 Below average skill levels High levels of ill health and disability – The proportion of people who are economically inactive because they are long-term sick is higher in the Sheffield City Region than in Great Britain (25.4% vs 21.8%) – Hotspots (i.e. Rotherham) with below average employment rates for people with long-term health conditions. – SCR has lower rates of employment for people with mental health than the national average. – The employment gap for people with learning disabilities is wider in the SCR than in England as a whole.

Sheffield City Region Exclusion is more intense and concentrated in some communities, either of a geographical or demographic nature. Often these communities experience multiple barriers and there is a complex web of factors reinforcing exclusion.

Other Issues Digital Exclusion – Affects 95,000 people in Sheffield alone (Heeley Online Centre – 2015) – Barnsley is ranked 8th out of 125 areas surveyed for digital exclusion; 16% of Doncaster and 8% of Rotherham Communities are deeply digitally and socially excluded.(ESD.ORG) – D2N2 LEP cites digital exclusion as one of its social inclusion challenges (D2N2 LEP ESIF Plan) Financial Vulnerability – Approximately 43% of households in Sheffield are vulnerable to significant levels of financial stress (State of Sheffield 2015) – Over 5 th of children in South Yorkshire were in living in poverty in 2013 (Rotherham Star Feb 13) – Support for groups suffering financial exclusion is a priority for the D2N2 social inclusion strategy.
