WHAT IS THE NUVA RING? -Vaginal Contraceptive -Made in the Netherlands -American FDA Approval July 2003

HOW DO YOU USE IT? -Start at the beginning of a woman’s 28 day cycle -4 week cycles -Free week -3 Hour exposure before becoming ineffective

HOW DOES IT WORK? -estradiol 15μg (estrogen derivative) -Etonogestrel 120 μg (progestin derivative) -Thickens cervical mucus (sperm inhibition) - thins out endometrial walls (eggs can not fertilize or attach) -Luteinizing Hormone -Permeability

PROS -No reports of infertility (compared to birth control) -After 0-4 weeks regain ability to become pregnant -Low level of hormones -More effective than pill (1% to 8%) -Use during sex

CONS -Some side effects -Ring displacement -Unorthodox / discomfort
