Searching the Web Or How NOT to Get Lost In Cyber Space

Information Sources On the Web Search Engines Metasearch Engines Directories/Subject Directories Online Databases Books (from the online catalog –OPAC)

Before You Start Think about your topic Choose some key words that will lead you to the best searches In keyword searches, start by working with no more than 2 or 3 search tools If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again Adjust the search to include other key terms or phrasings Don’t be satisfied with the first piece of information you find

Keyword Search Operators Boolean Terms And (+) Requires that both terms are present somewhere within the document being sought.

Boolean Word: Or Requires that at least ONE of the terms is present

Boolean Word: Not Excludes any document containing the term

Other Search Operators Phrases Words enclosed within quotation marks denote an exact phrase. It is similar to the Boolean NEAR. It is treated as a single term Case sensitive Proper names use upper case Use lower case for query terms Truncation The use of the stem or main part of a word to search for variations of the word using the asterisk [sing* searches sings, singing, singer, etc.]
