The Ancient Greece is a piece of land in the basin of the Mediterranean sea with the population which did not possibly exceed two hundred - three hundred thousand people. And in this small world the huge spiritual culture was born and flourished.

Greeks named the country Elladа, and themselves ellins. Those who did not speak Greek, ellins named "barbarians". Speech of strangers seemed to them a set of senseless sounds - to something like "bar-bar- bar". Later all people who did not know the Greek culture were named the barbarians.

One hundred years ago the history of Greece was observed from XII century B.C. And though in historical legends and songs- poems of the beginning of the 1 millenium B.C. it was told about ancient empires and feats of heroes of that time, many scientists considered it poetic fiction and mythology. They changed their opinion when there had been founded monuments more ancient than the ruins of the classical period (Ruins of legendary Troy, Parthenon and others).

Excavations in Mycenae, on the islands Rhodess and Phere have confirmed the idea about existence of a great civilization which preceded classical ellin’s, and have removed the Greek history further away in the depth of centuries.

In science, philosophy, literature and the fine arts Greece has surpassed the achievements of the ancient east civilizations having been developing already more than three thousand years. The literature, art and philosophy of the Ancient Greece have given a push to development of the European culture. The Ancient Greece has opened the man as the fine and perfect creation of the nature, as a measure of all things.

Magnificent samples of the Greek genius were shown in all spheres of a spiritual and sociopolitical life: in poetry, architecture, sculpture, painting, politics, science and law. Greeks have created the science which some researchers name " thinking like Greeks ". Greeks have achieved significant progress in medicine. Among the first serious anatomists it is necessary to name the philosopher and doctor Alkmeon. The most famous doctor of all times and nations Hippocrat understood the importance of anatomy, necessity to have exact knowledge about functions of various organs of human body.

Greeks worshipped to gods representing different forces of the nature, public forces and phenomena, to heroes - mythical ancestors of tribes, founders of cities. In myths layers of different epochs - from ancient worship to plants and animals up to apotheosis the man, representation of gods in images of young, fine and immortal people were kept. The significant place in the Greek mythology was borrowed with legends about heroes - children of gods and mortal ones.

The mythology became a significant element of the Greek culture on the basis of which literature, philosophy and science developed. The works of Homer, Hesiod and Esop made the basis of literary education.Such masterpieces as “Iliada” and "Odisseya“ by Homer are the greatest inheritance of culture of the ancient Greece. The top of lyrics of the ancient Greece was the works of Sapfo from the island Lesbos.

At present Greece is the progressing state. The economy of Greece considerably depends on tourism. Visiting of ancient monuments of one of the most ancient civilizations is very popular among people of all the world.
