Objective: Write down & recall each definition Extra credit: Write a poem about yourself using each poetic device

 The repetition of consonant sounds, usually in the beginning from littera = script / letter Reading a poem with alliteration is fun to hear. a=to H How is the picture related? A big bully beats a baby boy.

 bringing up a fact from literature, history, religion, politics, etc. a=to from ludere = to play The poem’s allusion to the Holocaust created a somber mood. How is this picture related? “When she lost her job, she acted like a Scrooge, and refused to buy anything that wasn’t necessary.” Scrooge was an extremely stingy character from Charles Dickens’, A Christmas Carol.

words that make you see, feel, hear, smell or taste something imaginem (nom. imago) "copy, statue, picture, idea, appearance" The vivid imagery helped me understand the significance of the setting. It was dark and dim in the forest. – The words “dark” and “dim” are visual images. The children were screaming and shouting in the fields. – “Screaming” and “shouting” appeal to our sense of hearing or auditory sense. He whiffed the aroma of brewed coffee. – “whiff” and “aroma” evoke our sense of smell or olfactory sense. The girl ran her hands on a soft satin fabric. – The idea of “soft” in this example appeals to our sense of touch or tactile sense. The fresh and juicy oranges are very cold and sweet. – “ juicy” and “sweet” when associated with oranges have an effect on our sense of taste or gustatory sense.

a comparison between two different things without using a key word I pay attention to songs with a lot of metaphors because the comparisons make the lyrics interesting. from pherein = to carry, bear meta = over / across He is the apple of my eye.

a type of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is talked about as if it were human from persona = human being + from ficare = to make something The personification of the weather made it seem more realistic and dangerous. How is this picture related? The fire swallowed the entire forest.

Comparing two different things using a key word (like, as, seems, etc.) from similis = like The similes in the poem we read evoke feelings of anger. How is this picture related? She was as white as a ghost.

 the voice that is talking to us in a poem The speaker in the poem reminded me of my grandmother. from sprecan = to speak Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

the attitude a writer takes toward a subject, character, or reader from tonus = sound / accent The sarcastic tone in the poem confused me. “The movie was amazing! I was laughing so hard I cried!” Vs. “You can only watch infantile humor for so long before you want to punch yourself in the face.”
