Crazy Like a Fox By: Loreen Leedy Reference – Leedy, L. (2008). Crazy like a fox: A simile story. New York: Holiday House. Reading Level – Below 8th grade level Connection – This story provides multiple examples of similes, and shows how to include similes in writing.

If You Were Onomatopoeia By: Trisha Speed Shaskan Reference – Shaskan, T., & Gray, S. (2008). If you were onomatopoeia. Minneapolis, Minn.: Picture Window Books. Reading Level – Below 8th grade level Connection – This story provides examples of onomatopoeias, and shows how to include them in writing.

This would be a good text to identify, analyze, and interpret figurative language.

Similes, metaphors, and imagery are common literary devices used throughout this text. This is great text to get students identifying figurative language devices.

Reading Level – Above 8th grade level Connection – This is a strong text for higher oder thinking skills, such as analyzing and interpreting a poem as whole. In this poem we find imagery, metaphor, and personification.

Reading Level – On 8th grade level Connection – This text has a wide variety of figurative language devices, including: simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, imagery, and personification. This would be a great text to implement a review for students.

Reading Level – On 8th grade level Connection – This text utilizes a great teaching strategy, in order to teach hyperbole. It would be beneficial to listen and read to the song before identifying and analyzing figurative language elements.
